Talked to a friend of mine this morning. Apparently his boat has spun the prop. And guess what. Tow Boats, unlimited towing , does not cover towing a boat from it's own slip. So, I have volunteered. Gonna take my little skiff, a 14 footer, and pull his 36 to a haul out. That should be fun.

"Unlimited Towing"

Yeah ... I have "unlimited towing" too. I lost my engine in the middle of NY Harbor. Luckily, I was buddy boating with a REALLY GOOD friend. He towed me to a mooring field where I grabbed a mooring. When I called Boat US for a tow to a repair marina, they initially told me it wasn't covered since I was safely moored. After some emphatic complaining they said they would tow me to the nearest marina. Unfortunately, that marina is outrageously expensive, and they had no mechanic available for at least 4 days due to an upcoming holiday.

Again, my friend (did I say what a REALLY GOOD friend he is????) towed me about 20 miles up river to Petersens Boatyard in Nyack. I can't say enough good things about them. They gave me a free ovenight mooring and had me up and running by 10 am the next day.

Makes me wonder about keeping the tow insurance .....

towing tip

I'd recommend not towing, but tying your skiff tightly to a stern quarter of your friends boat. That gives you far more control and eases communication with your partner on the other boat.

Is what I planned

Yeah, I plan on putting it "on the hip" as we call it. I tried towing a 28 once with a small skiff. and it was nearly impossible to maintain any type of a course. Will tie it to the stern quarter. Hopefully won't have far to go.

I did the stern quarter towing thing my diesel on my 30ft Catalina ...the dinghy had a 2 horse yamaha and we pushed it 15miles , but we got there

Not sure yet

He is now checking to find the closest marina that can pull it. Hope is there is one just a couple miles away. If they don't have a travel lift that can pull it, next choice is a long way. 20 miles or better.

You'll Do Fine

Just a week ago we towed a 28'er with no rudder 10 miles across the bay with a 13' McKee.

As long as you do not try to go more than 6kts you won't have a problem.

My understanding is that Boat US/Vessel Assist towing will tow from docks/moorings if you have the "Unlimited Gold" membership.

My friend checked

If he buys the premium tow package, the one above " unlimited" they will pay 50% of the cost of towing from his slip. It may be different in some areas. I had to get towed off after a hard grounding a couple years ago. I had tow boats insurance, but there was no tow boats within a reasonable distance, and I was afraid of losing the boat. So I called Sea Tow. He charged me 1400 and change. 200 an hour, for two hours, plus 25 a foot. The Sea Tow guy told me that they have a per foot charge, even if you have their insurance. AND they have extras for such things as bad weather, late at night etc. Is the only time I have ever been towed, so not familiar with all the BS details.

You got robbed! I used to have towboat US and they towed me off a mooring into my slip, all charges covered by their insurance. I now have boat US, and the gold coverage includes a tow from your slip to a ramp for haul out-again, no charge. If boat US doesn't have a boat available, you have to call them but they will authorize a competitor's tow-it's in their contract.

Hey Phil, Is this John's boat your talking about? I would check again, I'm pretty sure Boat US will cover all charges even if they need to tow from the slip.

Big Difference in Programs

The local Sea Tow franchisee makes his money on memberships he gets nothing from doing a tow other than what he charges the member. As such he is going to be less likely to want to accept a tow and more likely to charge extra for weather etc...
The local Tow Boat US franchisee makes nothing on memberships and is paid by Tow Boat for the tows he accepts. This makes him much more likely to accept a tow.
Here is my personal experience. I was on a friend’s boat in the ICW south on Venice FL where we ran aground. He had both Sea tow and Tow Boat insurance. He called Sea Tow first only because he came across that card first in his wallet. Sea Tow told him what time high tide was and if we could not get off then they would send a boat out. A boat from Tow Boat saw us as he passed towing another boat North when he came back he stopped and asked if we needed help and was able to pull us off charged us nothing though we tipped him well.

Russ, yeah, its Johns boat. Apparently has spun the prop on the shaft. There is a marina just up river from him, but he isn't sure they can pull it. And he says Bent Marine is a bunch of asses, and doesn't really want to use them. Next closest is either the former Maritime Systems or Lake Catherine. Not sure yet where he wants to take it. Anything other than what is on the river is a long haul, and have to go under the causeway.

Why doesn't he get a diver to pull the prop? Then he could fix what needs fixing and have the diver re-install.

If the prop is spun on the shaft as suspected, there is a very good possibility that there is goig to be a burr on the shaft or prop. The Morse taper is what holds most of the pressure here. The key way will not handle the power by itself. It there is a burr on the shaft or prop, it will have to be taken care of to fix it properly. Not something a diver can readily do.
