I feel like a bum for trying to find an easier way to complete a task so I can spend more time at the helm... but here goes. Does anyone have an easy way to mask the cabin top hand holds in preparation for varnishing. I started to just use the "blue" masking tape but this is incredibly tedious as the tape does not conform to the contours easily and takes about 6 pieces of tape for each handhold-to-deck mating. As I have 22 of these junctions to mask I got to thinking that "there has got to be a better way!" Thanks for any suggestions! Tim

... I found an outfit that saw a need in the market for this universal problem and came up with a potential solution: pre-cut handrail masking tape. I haven't used this stuff so can't comment on whether it's worth it, but check it out. Click link below to go to their web site. Trevor

You beat me to it, Trevor!

I've seen this product and have thought aobut using it but it's so darn expensive! I guess I'm a true sailor cuz I'm so cheap!! Anyway, I think it's made of the 3m blue tape so it should work pretty well. And good for you for varnishing!!! :) LaDonna

Take 'em off

I took them off first so I could strip them with Citri-strip. Much easier than sanding varnish. Only problem is...holes for water to leak in (dab of silicone fixes) and they are a royal pain to put back on singlehanded. Get help and it's very easy.

Unfortunatly there is no easy way to do it ..

I just did it and yes it takes time but in the end it is worth it to do it right. I used the blue 3m tape - (Excellent!) rolled out one long strip on the outside and one long strip on the inside, then I used two to four small pieces around each corners and curves. In the end the time you spend putting it down will be a lot less than the time you will spend cleaning up drops ..

I'm with Brian...

I just take 'em off. Use a cordless drill/driver, you'll have 'em off in no time. Allows you to really get at them and put on a bunch of coats. I gave mine 8 coats. They have been on about 9 months and there is no deterioration whatsoever. Rob
