On a return trip from Catalina, we started to have problems with our electronics, the autopilot would cut-off, the radar would shut down, etc. I noticed the voltmeter was showing about 10 volts and dropping, even though the engine was running. Checked voltage at the batteries and they were fully charged, and the alternator was putting out full power. After getting home I was able to trace the problem to the ammeter gage in the electrical panel. All the current must pass through it before getting to the equipment, so if it shorts out nothing will work right. If you ever experience these problems, check your ammeter. It can easily be by-passed. Just look behind the panel,it will be quite obvious how to do it. Happy Sailing Henry "Siboney"
