I think this years campaign was an insult to the intent of the cup. I am hopeful the SFYC will restore sensibilty and international competition.

'ceptin' it ain't there.

SFYC is the San Francisco Yacht Club which is in Belvedere, in Marin County, north bay, 3 miles north of San Francisco, and has nothing to do with BMW.

St. Francis Yacht Club is in the City but Ellison and they didn't get along, and has nothing to do with BMW.

The Golden Gate Yacht Club is the one BMW represents. It's on the Cityfront, just east of the St. Francis.

And you thought the racing and courtroom dramas were difficult to follow...;)

The Americas cup hasn't been right since they dropped the twelve meter rule and went to the ACC boats and now these anything goes boats. While the technology was cool it was very much like Dennis Conner in a cat versus a giant monohull. The 12 meter tule was based on a formula and for everything you did to gain an advantage in one area, such a LWL you suffered a penalty in another area. This kept the boats similar yet allowed for technical innovation. It was abandoned because the general feeling was there was no more room for technical advancement. i think this was due to computers in the design process and the ability to quickly iterate designs to arrive at an optimum solution. Once they had average conditions figured out they could iterate the boat design and come up with an optimum boat.
How many of you feel it should be raced in similar boats, kind of like NASCAR, so the sailors determine the outcome versus the technology? Personally I loved the twelve meters and wish they'd go back to that rule. The ACC boats were too big and fragile. I recall one of them breaking in half and sinking.

Just be thankful they weren't powered by lithium crystals.

How about one-design craft maintained by a neutral third party, and swap boats after every race?

There are enough one design series out there. The AC has always and should remain a race about technology. I do not agree with it being run through the courts but if you read the history of how it got started you will see that it was the superior design and technology along with some very astute sailors that started this whole thing.

You can thank the AC series for such innovations as tubular masts, sail track and modern blocks. Just a few that Captain Nat came up with over the years.

That being said I do think there should be some limitations to the designs to keep the costs down. That way we would get more countries involved and race more often.

It was cool to watch this latest series as they had great starting line srtategies and the boats did sail fairly closely in race 2. At least up to WW1 when BOR fired up the afterburners!

At least the cup is back in the US and I pray that 34 will be contested in the US and hopefully on the east coast. I don't care what they will be sailing, I will go to watch them.

I totally agree with Tim. There are plenty of one design events... and since the crews are all international it is of no interest to me to see who the "best" sailor is.

I totally DISagree with Tim also... the next regatta should be in San Francisco Bay Area.... I can't imagine a more picturesque, fan friendly venue.

SF bay would be nice Joe and my wife has already said we would have to do the canal so we could get over there to watch.

Unfortunately, there is probably too much wind there. Someone might break their 20 million dollar toy!

Agree there are plenty of one design races. If the AC isn't about innovation, technology, and designing the fastest boat, then where does that happen?

In the world of cars you get NASCAR, INDY, and Dragsters. In the end they all have rules that keep the cars somewhat similar or it would be a joke. Imagine watching an Indy car racing a NASCAR car? It would be a joke, yet that's comparable to the race we just saw. The ACC and 12 Meter rules kept it interesting from a technology standpoint and the racing close enough. I also didn't like this 2 out of 3 format. You'd think after this investment they'd at least want the fun of several races. Lack of maneuverability and shear size really limits these boats, can't imagine a tacking duel like the old 12 meters used to have. No attempt to cover the downwind boat and ruin their air. It is all just straight line speed. On the upwind leg only two tacks in 13 miles. Even going as fast as they were the boats were so large you didn't get much feel for the excitement of the speed. 33 knots in a 40 foot cat or tri would look a lot more exciting than a 90 footer. I guess regardless of the boats I would prefer to see more racing so the format of defender series followed by the AC finals makes for a lot more action and adventure.
I've seen high speed races, the offshore powerboat series, and that too is boring after a few laps. The initial thrill of watching them is soon replaced by the realization there is no racing action, one boat typically is much faster and it is just the overall speed that is the fun to watch. The fun in car racing is the close quarter passing attempts, blocking, drafting, etc. The possibility of crashing if you screw it up. They need to add that element back into the AC.
