Very sad..... Americas Cup used to be fun to watch.... not anymore.

What a farce!

The Cup is no longer a demonstration of a country's ability do design, build and sail a boat under specific rules. It is now a race between egomaniacs who hire mercenaries to design, build and sail their multi million dollar rule beaters. The skills are now reduced to computer designed and sailed boats. Might as well have radio controlled foot long boats.

Total agreement

It is becoming more about the deepest pockets and the smartest lawyers. I no longer pay any attention to this farce. How bout this. Lets have the best sailors each country has to offer, on totally stock production boats. Somewhere in the 40 foot range. How bout letting some poor working shmuck at least be able to identify with the boats, and root for his own country. All in favor raise your glass.

Actually, I really love this stuff.... all the politics and intrigue make the America's Cup that much more interesting. Yeh, sure it's big boys with big toys, but so is NASCAR! Here's a link associated to the sailing world link ensign Jon listed. It's the hysterical comments made by one of the judges who personally investigated the hastily organized Spanish yacht club that was the subject of the lawsuit.... read it, it's funny.

Actually, it was posted as an April Fool's day article.... but I think it rings closer to the truth than most realize.

I agree that it has no resemblance to the gentleman's race that it used to be, but I wasn't around back when it was (or perhaps I just wasn't paying attention) but I'm also intrigued by it all.
I do agree with Nice N Easy that it would be far mor interesting to us reg'lar folks with production boats, to see a race where all the boats are setup exactly the same and the captain and crew show up strictly to sail them.
But then again, how would the advancements like canting keels and carbon fiber bourbon glasses ever trickle down to us reg'lar folks without the big money out there pushing the design envelope for us?

I'm sorry, but when was America's Cup racing for the "everyman"?

Someone correct me, but wasn't America commissioned by a group of wealthy businessmen for the purpose of campaigning Europe for prize money?

I do agree todays legal nonsense is at best regretable. But if I remember correctly some of that has gone on all throughout it's history.

What is even more reprehensible is that this country can't seem to be able to mount a successful campaign.

But then we are the country that allowed America, a historic vessel that not only lent it's name to the race (and caputred the cup a second time), but served on both sides during the Civil War......... rot.

The cup has always been sailed by professionals much like the professional sports so many of us like to watch. I really don't care how much the big boys fight it out in court, to them I think its part of the game and they enjoy a good scrap whether its on the water or in the court. they also can afford to indulge themselves. I thought the last cup series was great, how many times have you seen a pro crew screw up so much. Incidentally I'm as good a tactician as they are, I can pick the wrong side of the course just like they can.

The Cup has always been about big egos and deep pockets. The only thing differnt now is the news coverage.
