Being a transplanted Kiwi living 600 miles from my boat and the ocean, during a long, cold winter, I often feel very sailing-deprived. There is a shortage of shrinks in this city who have an understanding of the emotional state of the land-locked sailor. This wonderful site and it's fine readers has helped prevent me from slipping into a nasty, deep depression. At risk of severe censure, I am predicting the Emirates New Zealand team will destroy the Swiss (no ocean there), the Americans (Oracle US, owner with no class and way too much cash), the Italians (know more about nice handbags and doubtful pasta), the French (they apparently wash down snails with huge quantities of bad wine) etc.... I am having trouble finding good North American TV coverage. Versus apparently has it but something on-line would be great. I guess I may have to upgrade from the rabbit-ears. Can anyone direct me to online coverage of the Cup starting April 3 so I can shake this thing? Signed, Suffering in Cowtown.

Here is the link

To the AC website. There is lot's of good information right now. I am not sure yet who I am rooting for. I tend to root for whatever boat Paul Cayard is on but that is because I think he is hot (not a bad sailor though). I also kind of like the Italian boats. I remember years ago when Paul Cayard was skippering on Il Moro, I think. He said that he was working on improving the Italian team tactics. One of the biggest problems Paul said was that all the other boats knew when they were going to tack because the crew would all throw their cigarettes in the water...

French/Italians

Princess, Having spent a good bit of time in France I couldn't help but laugh at the one about the other boats knowing when the Cayard boat was tacking cause the crew threw their butts (cigarette) overboard. Also have an Italian connection since the Admiral will be going over Easter, allowing me 9 days of no-guilt sailing since she won't be here to figure out other stuff for me to do.

You're in Washington, NC?

How cool is that! Some sailing friends of my husband and I just got back from New Bern last night. They have property down there near Fairfield and will be building a house there this summer and hopefully buying a boat once they move down there. I have another friend who is buying a Hunter 42 that he will be moving to Washington sometime this spring. He will be in the Carolina Wind Yachting Center, does that sound right? Do you know the place? Your wife is going to Italy? How cool is that! Enjoy your sailing!

Yep Washington, NC. I'm docked at McCotters which is a few miles downriver from Washington. Carolina Winds, is actually in Washington, small but nice and good people. Waters kinda thin until you get downriver a little ways though so he won't be able to sail away from the dock. If he's got a slip there he must've been on the waiting list for awhile since last time I checked there were about 50 people on the waiting list. New Bern is a great area too. Getting a little pricey since all you northern folks coming down here throwing money at the realtors though. Big sailing communities in both areas. The wife is going to Italy, wanted me to go but I decided to stay here and work/sail, emphasis on sail. Tell your friend to contact me when he get's here.

Thin Water

Princess just read my reply and wanted to clear up the remark about the thin water. Plenty of water around the marina and downtown area but it thins out east of the railroad trestle to the point that you don't stray out of the channel.

Thanks Hugh

Thanks for the great info Hugh, I am going to send this link to my friend. I don't think he has been on the waiting list but maybe he got in because he is putting the boat in charter for the time being. What you say about people flocking to New Bern is true. Our friends had decided to settle there about 10 years ago but since then we had about 5 or 6 different couples we know decide to move there. We hope to get down there soon ourselves.

From one Kiwi to another...

Hi Pete, I'm also a displaced Kiwi, jut returned from down-under last week. You know, I didn't notice the fervour re the Americas' Cup on this visit that I saw in the past. I have also been looking for coverage. I looked at the Versus (ex OLN) site and couldn't determine if they are covering the April series. I'll certainly be checking at 8:30 am (Eastern) next week. I saw that Animation Research Ltd. of Dunedin has again won the contract for the real-time on-line graphics coverage as they have in the past, but I looked at their web site and could not find any mention of the 2007 challenge. A google search turns up lots of stuff... Derek

Looks like the real-time animated coverage of the cup is being handled by americascupanywhere.com at a cost of $40 for the whole series... Derek

HIjacked

Sorry about the hijack too Pete, but had to answer Princess' question. Anyway, I'd like to know about AC coverage too. Hope we can bring it back to the US where it belongs. I would've thought OLN would be carrying it. Unfortunately my cable provider doesn't carry OLN so can't even watch Tour de France. I might suggest Direct TV, my son in law is French and he gets a couple of French language stations on his and I'll be the way the French are about sailing they'll have some coverage, also somebody told me there's a watersports or boating channel available on direct TV. Gotta look into that.

Amreica's Cup Fanatics

Derek and Princess et al, Now we are getting somewhere. I found the Versus link (attached). Up here in the frooooooozen North we do not seem to have Versus. I am checking that. I may have to get a dish (and have her tune in my rabbit ears or pedal a littler faster). Derek, the Alcatel site looks like it might be good backup but those graphics are not quite as good as the real thing. I will continue this mission. My counsellor is happy with my progress. Once again you have displayed your class fellow sailors. Sorry about the barb Princess, that pink bikini must have affected my brain. Pete

Au contraire, mon frer...

Pete, On the contrary I found the graphics in the Alcatel site to be superb! Did you run the freebie sample race of Alinghi vs. NZ? It takes just over an hour (and Alinghi wins :( ), but I found the ability to change viewpoints, display race parameters (speed , distance vmg, advantage, etc) in real time to be fantastic! If/when I view the races, I'll certainly have that software running on my lap-top alongside my recliner as I watch. The software appears to be improved over the earlier versions - which were also good for their time. Of course, at my advanced age I'll have to watch the stress levels induced by watching cartoon boats creep over a computer screen. It's almost as good as watching my anti-fouling paint dry each spring *5 . It's a shame if the TV coverage does not start until the Louis Vuitton semi-finals on May 14. Go Kiwis! Derek

No problem Pete

Those of us of an elevated status have learned to accept the barbs of the commoner and simply rise above them... ;) LOL!! I have DirectTV with the Versus channel. Since I have Tivo I have been picking up all the AC coverage they have been doing. There has been lots of AC news on one show called "Seamaster Sailing" and another show called "America's Cup Magazine". Lots of fun. The only thing is looking at the show schedule on Versus a lot of the dates for the LVC and the AC race days conflict with dates we'll be on the boat and away from the TV! Arrghh!! Somebody really should have checked with me first.
