American White Pelicans

Returning from a week plus cruise around the San Juan Islands observed a flock of about thirty American White Pelicans in Padilla Bay last week. They have returned to their nesting place just off the north channel of the Ditch. Did not see them last year, but have in prior years nesting and fishing in the Bay.

As you head south, and before the swinging bridge, in the channel there are two small spits or islands on the refinery side. Their nest is on the south end of the first spit as you head south. If not there you can see them clustered on the east side of the channel fishing in the shallows of the bay mid tide. They tend to stay close together as a flock and are easy to spot due to their bright white color with black wing tips and size. A very majestic bird.

Never saw them before until about five years ago when they first appeared at this spot. Watched them herd and feed in the shallows much like the Seagulls do when they feed on a large fry school.

Again you get an interesting experience while adventuring in the rich and plentiful waters we enjoy sailing.

They have returned to Lake Erie, too, where they were once common. Their breeding ground is on Pelee Island. We saw two of them last year. A wonderful return!

Heading out into Padilla Bay a few weeks ago counted well over 100 White Pelicans in three separate flocks. Returning yesterday saw one lone Pelican. Odd. Usually stay close together as they move about.

They come through here usually in January.. This is on a little lake just south of downtown, on the edge of LSU campus:
