Am-meter connection

Hey everybody, my amp meter is not working, I looked at it’s connections, it seems weirdly plugged, but having never wired one up I’m at a loss

Bothe connections seem to be jumped

The two wires are probably carrying the current to be measured. The metal connecting them is probably a very low resistance but precisely tuned resistor. The meter measures the voltage from one side of the resistor to the other to determine the current. There could be corrosion somewhere affecting its ability to read that very low voltage drop and throwing off the readings.

Measuring the amps being produced is measuring one side of the connection. The load side.
Then you use an Amp meter you look at the load being transmitted through the red wire.

Clamp meter only is wrapped around the single wire. Red wire. Load wire.

Amp meters should be on the negative lead as that is the side that should have a single path back to the battery, and not multiple paths to various systems.
