Am i overthinking this?

Still learning about my M25 sooooo.....

When checking the oil today I found that it looks full on the dipstick. For some reason I decided to take the cover off of the oil fill on the crankcase and noticed that it didn't look like there was oil in there.

Am I supposed to see oil in it? I am actually surprised how clearly visible it is in there!

Just like (almost) with a car, the oil lives in the sump at the bottom of the engine pumped from there up through the valve train. You should definitely NOT see it in at fill cover

If you have a diesel or gas inboard, the crankcase is at the bottom of the engine. The valve cover is at the top of the engine just like in a car. Read the engine manual, if you have not this yet. Always read manuals and instructions

There should be a coating of oil visible on the parts in the valve cover and in the oil filler hole but there should not be a pond in there. The opening you showed in the picture will have moving parts when the engine is running and may even spray oil out. That is why the plug is gasketed.

Ok. Good! Thanks guys and I will feel better motoring out tonight. Still trying to get used to the diesel and I am loving it (and it's location in the 310) more and more every day.

I do have a tendency to overthink everything though!!

Look in the fill on your car. I bet it looks the same.

I guess we pay attention to boat engines but take the car to Jiffy Lube? You can learn a lot about boats from cars.

You are aware of the seal on the dipstick, and that you have to take it out first (just lift it up to clear the seal) and let the oil settle before reinserting and checking the level, right?
