Am I missing something here? (hull liners)

Recently I stripped all the shag rug and foam pad off the cabin ceiling of The Hippy Glider as well as the stars and moons airbrushed on to various panels. I want to re-bed all the through deck bolts. I noticed that whoever (O'day?) did it last used Boat Life or some similar material on the interior behind fender washers as well as the exterior. It would seem to me that sealing the inside is counterintuitive in that any moisture that gets into the coring would have at least some opportunity to leave by evaporation if it were left unsealed so why seal it? I suppose if it sinks......... Any thoughts?

Also - has anyone ever taken all the adhesive off and just left the FRP? Is there any easy way to get it off?

I think you don't want to seal the interior part of the fastener because if the exterior leaks you want to know about it. If the interior is sealed the moisture might be soaking into the core unseen.

Just my thought. Not an expert at this.

Many times the caulking comes through on the through bolt when installing it.

I have reseated many through deck fittings and know that if the the sealant (I use 3M 4200 mostly) does not show past the threads of the nut I didn't use enough.
I have removed the fabric liner in my hanging lockers, By scoring with a utilty knife then pulling the initial layer off, then scaping with a putty knife and finally wetting and scaping the residue with acetone. I then epoxied verticle stringers to the hull and finished with horizontal 1x6 cedar that I leave unfinished to retain the fresh aroma.
It was atwo day project.

Thanks for your responses - I have been away from the web for three days. Whoever did the bedding on the Hippy Glider actually set the fender washers in sealant to the point of it extruding out around the circumference of the washers. I had not thought about it getting on the threads, I suppose that would seal the hole from the inside anyway. Also, all the nuts on the inside were acorn. I have decided to go with standard hex nuts so that I do not inadvertently bottom the nut out rather then secure the bolt. I will take my chances on the sharp edges. It could not look much less than it did before.

As far as the acetone - did that actually take it down to the frp?
