My favorite silly threads:

No you are not an endangered species but you could be considered threatened. You and I would have no conflict about boats or maintenance. When the engine oil looks dirty I change it, if my jib gets dirty when I ship the anchor then the next time it rains it will get clean. I checked one time with a candle in a mason jar at a half mile and I could see it, so I figure that a half inch wick will serve. I have watched my neighbors dock their boats and spend the next hour rubbing them. An hour after my boat is secure in her slip I am either taking a nap or enjoying a glass of wine.
Anything on rubbing compound. I figure dead gel coat is good sun screen for the remaining gel coat. I do wax windows, only because I have had to pay real money replacing cracked polycarbonate ones.

"My galvanized anchor has rust spots and looks bad." Use it more. Also anything about SS chain.

Towing. In 25 years of sailing I've had more than a few failures, but I also have an engine, numerous sails, a dingy, and anchor + rode. Better threads would concern jury-rigging. Getting towed would be just too embarrassing, since it points to a failure to think. And too much attachment to a schedule. I have towed others. I have sailed into my slip a twice. How about warping out of a slip to go sail (the water had blown out of the Bay and the mud in my berth is just soup anyway)? I've done that too. More educational than a tow.

Anything about apparent wind. We all had trig in high school; what is so complicated? If this is not obvious, the writer needs to sail more. True wind? look at the small surface waves. I once got so annoyed at the information-overload on a delivery, that I threw a towel over the gauges I didn't need.

High-tech line on modest size cruising boats. Replacing wire halyards and a few other interesting applications - very good. Travelers, purchase-type mainsheets, jib sheets: these are sized for handling, not strain.

Questions that would be in ANY sailing manual.

My current boat was named "Auspicious" when I bought it. That HAD to change. I might have a yacht, but it won't be a yacht. It is now "Shoal Survivor." I like pressing my luck in shallow water explorations.

I will admit that everything on my boat works, and that I upgrade things not because they are worn, but because I have a better, cheap idea. I am an engineer and a tinker with a huge might-need pile to work though.

It's why I replaced the stationary ports on my boat with laminated safety glass. It was $27 a port cut and ground, but maintenance free all the way, and I know how hard that stuff is to break, and if it does break it seldom leaks or falls out.

My philosophy is that I want to sail, not take pictures.
If that fails, I can always be a bad example.

Ken.

Well I'll give my 2 cent worth...

The last boat I had was a "Work Boat". It was in sailing condition, I just thought all things had to be "Just Right" before sailing it. In 2 summers we made it out a few times.
This boat I have changed the priorities to Sail first work later !!
I do like things to work and if they are onboard I will fix it.. But I refuse to lose a day of sailing just to fix some thing that don't need fixed to sail.
Yes I do stay at the dock to install the bimini, or the holding tank that I will install next week, but when it's a nice day and the wind pipes up, I will put the tools away and set the sails.

Here's a good reason to make and keep notes

On January 10, 2009, I installed our brand new powered subwoofer. We have some inexpensive Radio Shack speakers which are fine for high notes, but the lack of bass was a bummer, since the cheap outdoor speakers in the cockpit gave us more bass than down below. After waiting a year or so to gather funding (i.e., "Please, don't get me another sweater for a gift, give me MONEY so I can save for what I really want!:)) I installed it that particular day.

How do I know I did that? It's in our LOG.

So, last week we used the boat and the danged subwoofer's little power light was not working, nor was the subwoofer, which had been working after I installed it, but NOT on our few recent cruises in just the past few weeks now that my leg has healed barely enough to get me to get back to the boat. As long as I can crawl, I will sail!!!

I took some time off this afternoon to check it out. No light, no power, fuse OK, harness OK, trace wiring all the way back to the electrical panel. Open panel, find subwoofer wire (carefully and clearly labeled). Trace wire connection to stereo switch/fuse????

NOPE. I must have gotten very "clever" back in January: I had connected the subwoofer power to the shower sump pump switch!!!

Why? 'Cuz the shower sump pump and music never happen together on our boat. When I'm showering, I'm NOT listening to music, and even if I did, there's enough in the circuit to allow it.

Plus, I just hit my head in one of those D'oh!! moments: I did that deliberately, because I wanted to be able to turn the subwoofer off even when the stereo was playing to see the difference it made. For instance, for baseball games, the subwoofer does nothing, so why have it on if it doesn't help audibly.

My January "cleverness" turned into a June swoon.

Why?

Because I hadn't written it down!!!

Also, as a "good" excuse, I hadn't actually had time to use the new subwoofer, since it was installed on the 10th, and my son & I went skiing on the 12th and I broke my leg on the 15th.

Moral of the story (which I just couldn't help pass on to you all) is:

Keep a LOG and WRITE STUFF DOWN.

This applies to young and old, and ancient, like me! :)

Saves a lot of grief. I was thinkin': Hmm, gotta take it out and send it back, I knew I did it right, why isn't it working, what a bummer...

Nice day, though, 'cuz it's workin' great. Boom, boom, boom...

Now dancing the jig on the foredeck!
