...or maybe there's NEVER been others like me.
I don't keep maintenance records.
I can't quote COLREGS (I know them , just can't quote paragraph numbers!).
It annoys me that I have to have insurance. I've never subscribed to a towing company.
I don't have a battery isolator, and will store them on cement. I'll "deep cycle" a starting battery.
There's LOTS of things on my boat that don't work.
I have NO IDEA how much candlepower my kerosene lamp that I use for an anchor light puts out (nor how much it's supposed to have).
I'm not freaked out by blisters or deck delamination.
I don't have an EPIRB.
I don't keep receipts.
I build my own dinghies out of plywood, and don't apply for a HIN for them.
My boat is dirty and smelly and I'm sure not properly documented.
But you know, I've never had an accident, never hit anyone, and only once in 30 years damaged my boat. I've never called the Coast Guard. I've always made it home, and most who sail with me say I'm one of the most relaxed, easy-going Captains they've sailed with.
And I enjoy myself.
Seems to me there were lots like me 20-30 years ago. Now that you need insurance to get moorage, many boats like mine are going under the chainsaw. Nobody even WANTS boats like mine - they want them shiny and new and big and with all the lasest government-approved equipment.
So - am I a dying breed?
