I have heard about a chemical called sodium silicate. It is also called "water glass". You mix it w/water, paint it on, let dry

Powder Coating?

John: You may do some research on Powder Coating, this sounds similar. I had this done on a truck bumper and it was great. The automobile industry is doing this a lot to help eliminate paint spray in the atmosphere. It holds up well but you need to be sure that you DO NOT crack the finish. If you are putting screws or bolts into this finish, you should apply a dab of silicone to keep the finish from cracking when you tighten down the screw/ bolts.

Not the same at all.

John: After doing a little research, it does not look like this is the same thing at all. Powder Coating is a plastic like finish. Looks like high gloss or semi gloss finish. It is very durable. It is a sprayed on powder that gets baked. After looking at Sodium Silicate I am not sure where you get it and how it is really applied.
