I wondered why my batteries were dead and checked the voltage coming from the alternator with motor running and the meter read .4 something. It seems like a dead alternator. Where can I get a reasonably priced one for a Yanmar YSE 12, 1975 vintage. Or should I try to get it rebuilt? any help appreciated. West marine wants about $350. I heard there is a place in Fla that sells them for about $120 but don't know the quality, or the name of the place thanks ahead of time Barry Chesapeake Bay

The Aftermarket Approach

I recently wrote this forum when my starter went out. The Yanmar replacement was around $435, and and someone else on the list told me about place in Pompano Fl. Long story short: a replacement starter, Hitachi - same brand as original, cost me $134.00. Henry, the guy that told me about Capitol Electric, had replaced his starter and alternator about a year ago. His alternator and regulator cost him about $120.00. He has a '70's era hunter 30, not sure which year. So, if you can find someone local that rebuilds starters, you can probably do about the same. If you want help sending it to Florida, let me know. I know some people are convinced that Yanmar has a better, marine grade components than can be bought elsewhere. In some cases, that is probably true. But having held the old and new starters in my hands, and disassembled them for comparison, I have no worries. I believe that the same would apply to the alternators, also made by Hitachi, on my hunter 34.

For future reference..

Marathon Diesel in the Keys may be the source you were remembering. His web address: http://www.yanmardiesel.com/ The only source I have seen for hi-amp alternators with built-in regulators. And very reasonably priced. But know that any good auto electric shop can repair your alternator.

About 6 months ago I had one croke, no output, looked in the yellow pages and found a place in Orlando who rebuilds alternators, and starters. 2 days later and 68 dollars I had a rebuild alternator with a 6 month warranty.. I am sure that every city has one of these places.. FWIW. Fred
