Some of you may remember that not too long ago I posted up that I had a bleedback in the electrical system, which let the overheat/low oil pressure buzzer go off continously at about half normal volume, whenever the batter switch was on. As usual, several on here diagnosed correctly, and I found a bad diode in the alternator. Good news is, took it to Auto Zone, for a check out, and was hoping to find a replacement without having to buy something that was listed as marine. Diagnosis confirmed, alternator was bad, and their big, and I mean big, cross reference book came up with a direct replacement. Only difference is a small adapter for the ignition lead had to be switched over. The best news is the replacement cost is 60 bucks, with a lifetime warranty. This was a Hitachi alternator on a 3gm Yanmar. I would recommend that anyone needing an alternator, give a cross over book a try. This is the exact same alternator, with the exception of the small plug in adapter.

was that new one internally regulated or do you have an external smart regulator?

Regulator

The new one is internally regulated as was the old one. Not sure I see much advantage in the smart regulators when you consider the cost. I have a 400ah house bank, and have no problem keeping it charged up. Battery life is more than satisfactory, so I can see no advantage in the bucks for one of the smart regulators.
