Alternator question??

I just purchased a 1984 O'day 34 .I brought the boat from Sarasota to Fort Myers.When I went to start the engine several days later the battery was almost dead and that was after 5 hours of motoring several days earlier.I was wondering if there is any way to tell if the alternator is working properly?I checked the battery terminals and they are tight.

I can't say for certain how to check it, but I know it involves a multimeter and don casey's how to book called "This Old Boat". Also it will let tell you how to check your batteries.

Get a multi meter and check the voltage while the engine is running you should get about 13.7 or better....if thats the case then the alternator is OK, then A: you left something on, B: your battery's are toast and need to be replaced

Your alternator might be working fine, but your regulator, which often are bolted to the back of the alternator, could be the culprit. Also check your connections. Corrosion, dirty or loose fittings might prevent good current flow. You can also go to an automotive store and buy a battery checker which offers information about your alternator function, if you don't feel comfortable using a multimeter.
