The alternator on my 20 year old Renault 2.60 Diesel was frozen when I tried to start the engine for the first time this Spring. The v-belt spun and got chewed up while the alternator pulley refused to turn. Gently tapping the exposed fan blades with a hammer finally loosened the alternator, which then spun freely and operated normally. After a few weeks of normal operation it again froze this weekend. Once again it took some gentle taps to get it freed up and working. Anyone know what could be going on? Is this just the typical sign of an alternator about to die? If I want to replace it with an after market rebuild how do you determine the correct size etc? Any ideas appreciated.
