I would like to put a alternator on my mercury 6 but I have not had any luck in finding out if this is even possible.... does anyone have any suggestion. The local dealer said to buy a new motor.

Thanks

Save the effort.

Alternators for small outboard engines are incorporated mainly to be able to run basic navigation lights in a small craft. Their AMP output is very small and barely can act as a trickle charger or maintainer. It will not definitely recharge batteries in any resonable time. Mercury is manufactured by Tohatsu so you may check their web site. You do not mention the year model of your engine and perhaps there are no alternators designed for it. Just as well, save the money and the effort. Perhaps adding another battery to your bank may solve your needs.

I am with Benny. Another battery and a solar panel. It will work when the motor sleeps.

No Alternator for the 6

Some were available with a charging or lighting system. It won't charge a battery up but it will keep one topped off or be enough to run your lights.

I looked for one when I bought my boat but at nearly $200 and for the limited output I added a second battery and a charger to mine.

I have a 6 HP with an alternator on my 22 Hunter and it does a very good job. It charges it very well. I do have a very simple set up but runs all lights and charges the battery fine. I do have a solar panel to maintain the battery. It put out 6amps.
It is an option on many lower power engines.

Good luck.

Scott, What year is your motor, My Merc 6hp is a 1996. If you could get me a part # for the Alternator that would be GREAT. thanks

Todd,

My motor is a 2007 but the Yamaha I had before had the alternator and it was a 8HP 1983 model. I think you will have to go back to a Mercury parts dealer and see if you can get it as a kit. It might take some reseach.
Good Luck.
