Has anyone looked into a few newer alternatives to the Honda EU2000? Particularly the Hyundai HY2000si see http://www.hyundaipower.ca/hy2000.php

and the Yamaha EF2400iSHC
http://www.electricgeneratorsdirect.com/Yamaha-EF2400ISHC-Portable-Generator/p4433.html

They both have a higher surge and I've read the review on the Yamaha from someone who has both the Yamaha and the Honda EU2000. He indicated the Yamaha can hold the surge for at least 10 seconds which may be better for operating an A/C unit and said the Yamaha was acutally a little quieter at load.

I understand and know all about sound carrying over the water and not being a pest in an anchorage so lets not hash that out again here. I'm interested in thoughts on these if anyone has any experience.

Both the Yamaha and the Hyundai are about 75 pounds +_ so that is a consideration.

I haven't read any performance testing on the Hyundai. The Yamaha has been thoroughly tested and compared with the Honda in QST. among the conclusions, the testing company found that the Honda performed better on surge response and produces less conducted noise if the latter makes any difference to your radios performance.

The report unfortunately is available only to members and I can't legally reproduce it. If you want to read the report, your local library may have a copy of the June 2012 edition.

Provide me a list of parts and service centers for the Hyundai and then I might consider it.

I personally have not checked them out since they didn't exist when I got my Honda. That being said; here is what my Honda will do. I have a GE 12,000 BTU AC, I can start my Honda, then turn on the AC, let it run and take the load off the boat, then while it is running in ECO mode, be able to run the Charles 30 AMP charger for the batteries, run the heating elements to heat up the water tank, and then use the other AC systems on board like microwave, etc.

one just has to manage the energy requirements of the various appliances that are used.

honda works fine for me; like I first said, the others didn't exist when I got my Honda so I can't speak about them from any experience.

The Generac will not support my small 10btu AC when the Honda will. It's heavier and much louder, thank you Lowes for accepting returns.

I am having the Kipor 2000W. Looks wery simular to the Honda. I have had two generators from Kipor, one 1000W and the 2000W model. Both have performed superb.

I have the Honda and it has no problem running my fridge (AC only). I heard good things also about the Kipor. Weight and absolute quiet operation made me go with the Honda. Andreas, on a side bar, my wife and I will be traveling in Norway from the 12 to the 18 of this month, going from Oslo to Bergen. Any suggestions for us ?

You asked for "alternatives". Get a permanent gen-set installed. All the portables carry the risk of CO poisoning if the exhause finds a way inside the boat. Do you really want to carry that much gasoline on board? Seems like a fire risk that's avoidable.

The new Honda 2000 has a 30 amp plug - just plug your shorepower cord right in. They are less than $999 at Mayberrys including freight and no sales tax. Toss in Honda reliability and resale! Since most of us have outboards, we are carrying gas anyways. Cheapest ain't always the best.
