Has anybody come up with an alternative to roller reefing on the Sandpiper? Is installing a gromment halfway up the luff and leech and slab reefing ever been done by anyone out there? I really need a fast alternative method of reefing the main. Thanks, Joel

Option A or B

I have the roller reefing on my 1986 Sandpiper 565. From the posts I've read...it seems to be that or the hanked on setup. Have you been over to the CL form? About a dozen regulars post there about their 'Pipers. http://www.vaxxine.com/clsailboats/ ...under 'Info Center' hit on CL Forum

If you're refering to reefing the mainsail, yes!

Hi Joel! If you're refering to the main, yes slab reefing is the best way I find! Rolling the boom is a pain! When I got my 'piper I had a new main made with a row of reef points. I then added the necessary rigging for jiffy reefing. Note, just installing grommets is not enough. The sailcloth needs to be reinforced at these grommets. I also think installing them halfway up may be too high. (Hopefully my picture shows my reef points well) My sails are all put away in storage for the winter now so I can't readily measure, however a sailmaker should be able to reccomend a correct location, and properly install the reef points for you. As far as rigging is concerned, the Harken catalogue & website illustrate a single line system. I elected to make mine a two line system, where I have a reef line for the clew, and a separate line for the tack. Keep asking questions if you're not clear:) Do you typically sail Lake St.Clair, or do you trailer to different locations? Eric S/V Paradise Sandpiper 565, #144

I'm still learning this new forum:eek: I'll try this pic thing again!
You may be able to just see the clew reef point just under the bottom batten. Eric

reefing question

Eric. Thank you for your answer to my mailsail reef question. Yes I sail Lake St. Clair. although the boat trailers' easily, I keep her in a slip on Anchor Bay at the northern part of the lake. I love the boat. it took me 27 years to get it. Long story. LOL

.mainly tied up

my previous boat, a c&c wave 26 had slab reefing; it was necessary to use an outhaul and a downhaul to maximize sail shape/performance on the mainsail and rigging these lines can be easy or as complex as you would like (as in lines run to the cockpit from the downhaul, or point of origin tie-downs). Plenty of examples can be seen in a casual stroll around your local marina; see what will fit/work for you*
