My basic sailing course taught a standard MOB proceedure. This included having a spotter, going to a beam reach, doing a quick tack and then heading up as we released the sheets. It all seemed quite alkward, especially if the MOB occured at night. Are there any other approved and safe methods for this proceedure? Comments

Quick stop

I like the quick stop method. It essentially puts you hove to upwind of the MOB. As soon as someone becomes the MOB, turn into the wind, and go through the wind onto the opposite tack. Let the jib get backwinded. Do not adjust or change the jib sheet. Make a circle back to the MOB. Once you come close to the MOB, put the helm alee; this in combination with the backwinded jib will hove to the boat and stall you out. At this point the boat should be drifting downwind towards the MOB. As with any MOB procedure, as soon as he goes overboard, you throw out anything that floats and a spotter does nothing but point at the victim.

Quickstop upwind only

This is fine if you were upwind when the MOB went in. If you were downwind you would never get upwind to him with the jib backed.

Works that way too

If you are travelling with the wind and have a MOB, you would bear off on a beam reach, continue with the turn making your way back to the MOB, follow through the wind backwinding the jib, and wind up hove to near the MOB.
