After reviewing the forum archives on topping lift uses, I still don't see an alt use for the lift. I have a solid vang and it's great. Could the lift be reriged as a halyard, and be used to assist in the event someone goes overboard ?

Trash the topping lift!

Ed, If you have a rigid vang that works and you're happy with, get rid of the topping lift! It just adds to chafe (sp?) on the mailsail, and you'll never use it. It's attached with a single pin on the aft end of the masthead. I use my main halyard as a topping lift when moored to take strain off the rigid vang and to keep the boom from swinging back and forth.

I do the same. I got rid of mine and use the mount on the end of the boom for a storage spot for the main halyard

hmmm I kept mine

After clonking my wife on the head with the boom with an injudicious release of the topping lift I installed a boomkicker, works fine but I've kept the topping lift. I suppose I like the idea of having a wire attachment to the mast head for various possible uses, to heel the boat if aground, as a rigid attachment for a block and tackle, etc. I can't say I've ever used yet but I don't see the point in removing it. I haven't noticed chafe on the sail from the topping lift, I've got a standard Catalina sail with very little roach, though I have added full battens.
