Not me

But I have done oodles of work. Removed the old water heater. Cut the holes for the new, larger galley sink and faucet. Wife cleaned and bleached a large part of the interior. Cleaned the sail locker and stern locker. Designed and built a new access cabinet to the trash bin. I dream about sailing though  Tim R.

I hate to admit

That I haven't, even though the weather has been pretty good. Was 80 degrees today, but I am knee deep in interior re-do. Varnish, headliner, the whole nine yards. But it will happen soon.

Bietzpadlin is docked on the hard and I am just

trying to earn a living. Funny your choice of euphemisms. One of the Herrschoffs referred to fiberglass as frozen snot. ;)

Ihad a great little sail last weekend

I have been spending way too much time freezing and trying to earn a living in Indiana. So I decided to just try living for a few days. My wife and enthusiastic sailing partner was out of town with her mother. So a friend of mine since sixth grade and myself booked a couple cheap flights to Florida. The quickly hatched plan was to arrive, buy a couple of metal detectors (Bianca calls them mental detectors or nerd meters) and use my boat to visit barrier islands and detect along the beaches for coins and artifacts. two and a half hours after leaving Indiana, we were at my dock only to discover some lowly person had pillfered my outboard. Our mad-money budget was quickly absorbed for a new motor and the metal detector purchase was put off untill next time. But my friend Craig had never been on a sailboat and we had FANTASTIC SAILING. The kind of sailing where the boat just hunkers down and gets with it. Where the personality of the boat comes alive and it acts like its just as much into it as you are.(gusts of 25knots and first time ever properly tensioned halyards and back haul didnt hurt anything either) Anyway we sailed out of Bimini Bay on AnnaMaria island across the mouth of Tampa Bay and then clockwise out into the Gulf and around Egmont Key. We dingeyed to shore on Egmont, climbed up on the old fort ruins and ate our lunch laying in the sun. Besides the two of us, there was only one other person on the 400 acre island. The sail back was equally as great and my friend had a huge grin as he took the tiller all the way back to the dock. It was a great way to spend a weekend. Tuesday was back to work and 25 degrees

Sail the what?

Sunday was a lazy, two-and-a-half hour sail in fluky breezes and no more than 3.5 kts over the bottom, but the Admiral and I were in heaven with temps close to 70F and us in shirtsleeves. Lots of work to do on board but sailing is better, and now that the boat is just down the street, everything just got easier. Looking forward to the trip up North in the spring, too. So much to do, so little time, but who cares? Sorry about your motor, delighted with your story. We love it when we can introduce someone to a different aspect of being on the water. Now is we can just get some word from those wandering Meisters? Regards, Patty and Bill Coxe, O40 Kukulcán, New Bern, NC

The 10-15 knot winds never showed up but

we had 6-8 knot winds early and were making 6.5 GS. Later when they dropped a bit we came back into Flounder Bay and found some breeze to play with. Not enough to bury the rails but enough for a 5 knot cruise in a bit of sunshine. I think the temp was around 40 F.

You could have had lots of fun yesterday...:) Had gusts to 35 here at the house. Fun in the wind is still a month and a half away for me yet. Works been slow for me too so have slowed down on any more boat upgrades or projects also. Reading some great books though, just finished "Taking on the world" by Ellen MacArthur. That is one tough woman, I dont know if I'd qualify to be her bail boy. Lance... Only in my dreams...;) ...By the way, How do you aford to fly down every time you want to sail your boat? Do you work only in winters in Indiana?

Yeah, Smith Is had gusts to 56 yesterday.

I can reach Smith Is in about 30 minutes from my slip so it was a blowin' up here.

Stillraining-I pay for atleast 1 flight/mo. by brownbaging

lunch. My wife and I run a small but growing trucking/logistics company in In. We work year round and are on call 24/7/365. For the last decade most of our spare change has gone back into the company. I am currently by no means a man of great means. We keep a small and simple boat. We have found that by eating better homemade meals at work, instead of buying carryout,we save enough to pay for a flight a month to go sailing. Sometimes twice. Sometimes we get a call to take a small van asap to or from SW Fla. and my wife and I will make the run and sneak in some sailing. I will probably never retire. But I hope to open a branch office in Sarasota Fl. and perhaps my wife and I will rotate ourselves there half the time. When my ship comes in,so to speak, I hope to have a 50 footer so I can invite my friends for a week at a time. Thats my basic story and Id love to hear yours. Lance

sailing

The weatherman lied, Saturday started out nice and sunny. I called two of my friends, who needed no encouragement , and we decided to head out for a few hours. Just as we are about to head to the boat, it starts to snow, big heavy and wet. We figure we will try anyway , maybe it will stop.It did. Long story short, we had a great day on the water, the first in almost two months. We would have liked a bit more wind, but at least we could sail. Several beer did not survive.

Like you I am self employed. The older I get the less disciplined I am about brown bagging and find myself in a greasy spoon for something to eat. I respect your dedication to enable you the plane money. Like you I see no way to retire completely, my goal is semi-retirement or work 6 months in Washington during the summer and fall and spend 6 months sailing, maybe have the boat baced in one area for one year and then move to another the next. Thats the plan anyway. Thanks for sharing if you ever have to deliver anything in my neck of the woods look me up well take you into some beautiful country sailing the San Juan and Gulf Islands. ( Summer time that is...;) )
