On my weekly check of the boat I found the bilge pump was dead. After cursing the 2 year old pump a few times a new unit was purchased. When I removed one of the 3 screws that mount the base to the bilge a small salt water fountain leaped into the boat 3"-4" in hieght. The screw was only ~ 1.25" long, is that the thickness of my hull or do I have a severe build defect? Rick.

Guessing here, but...

am assuming your pump was directly over the keel. If this is true then what you are probably seeing is the water trapped between the "hulls", the epoxy skin of the outside and the epoxy skin layer of the inside. This would explain why I found so many tiny blisters when I scraped and sanded the bottom down to the gelcoat, trapped moisture. Mostly from the inside I suspect, there's no barrier coat in the bilge.

Ed, trapped water is possible but

To have a 3"-4" salt water fountain is not possible from trapped water. The water entering the boat was ex ocean.
