The assumption that this movie is about sailing, what to do or what not to do, is a mistake made by many.

The movie was supposed to be about sailing. What is frustrating is that is could have told the same story, been more compelling, had it portrayed the solo sailor in the way we all know is accurate.

Joe, it's funny that you say that because I really don't know what the movie was about. Was there even a point to it? I think that Redford has been very good in many movies where he says and shows us more ... with few words. I think movies like Downhill Racer, Electric Horseman, even Butch Cassidy did a lot with him as a person of few words.

But in this movie, he literally went overboard. The lack of dialogue gave us nothing. His open letter in the beginning really explained very little. My assumption would be that the movie would go on to flesh it out. But the movie barely even related to the opening letter, except that we saw him toss the message (in bottle) out into the ocean at one point. But the words in the message remained meaningless, because nothing was ever explained (at least I caught nothing). It seemed to be a movie about a man struggling to survive while problems continued to escalate. But I had no sense of caring how it would turn out. The character never gave us any window into the purpose of the movie and there was very little else to go on. That's probably the reason why we spend so much time nit-picking the technical flaws ... there was nothing else to observe or learn from this movie.

Take a look at the movie Hideaway with Josh Lucas. There wasn't much dialogue, but there was so much to learn with the little bits and pieces of it tied in with the sequences (and great cinematography). "It's one great traverse, laddie, all of it" had so much meaning in just one brief scene. That movie had probably just as many technical flaws, but who was noticing?

As you can tell, I like discussing movies. But don't blame me for bringing this topic up twice!

Scott- I saw the movie as man against the elements and circumstances, but poorly done to the point where we lost focus on the main premise.
