I finally watched All Is Lost on PPV last night. I know it's been bantered around on this forum before. Yes i know Hollywood did this. I can get by the Crescent wrench tightening the coaxiel cable....
But why would any sane sailor take the time to shave and clean up when a big storm is approaching? I looked at my wife and said "seriously?"

Well I guess if Redford had taken those extra 20 minutes and hanked on his storm jib and prepared a little better for the storm, instead of shaving, we wouldn't have had all that "hollywood movie action"!

No wonder some folks are terrified to go out into the ocean on a boat.

Yes, about time we bash the Gravity movie which is basically the space version with better CG. :)

My only take-away from that movie is that Robert Redford REALLY LOOKS OLD now. It's been coming for a while, but he looks too old and feeble to be single-handing a boat. No offense to those of us who are aging, but he is not looking like he was fit for this.

It was pretty easy to pick this movie apart on the technical merits (or lack thereof). I'm guessing that the point of the shaving scene was to tell us that as an ancient mariner, he'd already been through these types of squalls and he wasn't particularly alarmed. But, OTOH, with all the stupid sequences that had occurred up to that point, the audience was thinking he damn well SHOULD be concerned because obviously he didn't know what he was doing.

I was prepared to like the film because I don't get too hung-up on technical detail nor do I nit-pick flaws. And I normally like RR films ... but this film has to be his worst.

BTW, some have said that he set the raft on fire on purpose, but I thought he acted like he was surprised when it caught on fire .... DUH! That just made the movie more laughable to me.

my take was this is more about a man making very poor choices, not in the planning, but in the reaction to problems, in a setting where anyone who would wind up sailing out there would know better...

Redford directed his own movie here... he has done this many times in the past with great success. this movie was poorly directed.
sad to say, but I think the age and confusion on his face in the movie is not so much an act, as it is a reflection of what is in his mind.... sorry, but the movie, as good as it could have been, wasnt!

I owe you guys $5 for saving me the cost of watching it on PPV.
and if I remember correctly there are only two lines in the movie....

one is some grunting, and the other is a single cuss word. its a long drawn out f word ending with a very pronounced k sound, that sounded very believable... like it wasnt really an act at all, but as someone reacting to the realization that they have just lost their butt on the production of a poorly directed movie...

EDIT... I forgot he did call for help a couple times on his soggy VHF... without success of course.

I paid Redbox $1.23 to watch it on the boat last week, it was worth that just to find out what poor decision was coming next.
A handheld flare instead of the orange smoke in bright sunlight ? He had to have them both in his hands when he had to read the directions on the flare.

I know I did my share of bashing this movie but I did watch it twice. My take is he was a troubled old man with personal problems takes off on a solo voyage not caring one way or another if he made it. Thus the shaving while his boat is sinking. He would do everything his demented mind could think of to survive though. Not necessarily a suicide cruise but more of how much do I want to live kind of deal. I'm looking forward to All is Lost the Sequel :)

Would the sequel be "All is Found."

In the sequel he in sailing around in a luxurious 40' plus yacht that is a true blue water boat. He has all of the important equipment and he ACTUALLY knows what he is doing.

Now, THAT made me laugh!

I'm not sure it was the directing. I'm more inclined to blame the writing. Whoever wrote the screenplay didn't have a clue. But clearly, Redford is not a sailor, or he would have made some changes while he was directing! Surely...

Just for kicks, i looked up the numbers. Budget was $9 Million (est). Box Office $6.2 million. Typical Hollywood math.

No....The sequel starts where the first one ended. The guy that pulls him out sees that it's Robert Redford and throws him back in :yeah:

'specially if the guy had seen the movie... kinda like catch and release.. we wanna make sure we dont see any sequels to that movie:D...

and its not the writers fault. the actual story line was ok but could have been better, but the director is the one responsible for making the movie entertaining and believable for the viewers...he needs to get more props for the set or do some homework if thats what it takes.
and with only a single actor to direct and one set to work in, how hard could it be to turn some attention to the details of reality on the set?...
and both the writers and the director must have been on a long coffee break when the cameramen decided to go home for the day.... so everyone thought the movie was a wrap and it went in the can without a complete and proper ending....

If Redford actually knew anything about sailing it might have been worthwhile. Like any idiot crossing an ocean would not have at least made sure his antenna cable was big time tight before leaving. How about thread lock or some tape? How about putting your storm jib up before the storm hits?

Well to be fair, he did have a shaving emergency to deal with.

Now, if Morgan Freeman had done the acting in this movie, it would have been worth watching! He sails quite a bit in the Nantucket area, I think.
