Yes, you can have it both ways

Both the SeaLand the Thetford "MSD" portapotties can also be carried off the boat if necessary. No one else may care if you carry it up the dock at your marina, but you might..'cuz water and waste weigh 8.333 lbs/gal...making a 6 gallon portapotty tank weigh about 50 lbs when full. You COULD go with the small 2-3 gallon model, but IMO that's not enough capacity for 4 people unless you want to be forced to carry it ashore just about daily. As for Canadian law requiring only permanently installed holding tanks (whether separate or part of a self contained system) on the Great Lakes... They're pretty strict about enforcing it on CN flagged boats, but in 20 years I've yet to hear of a single US boat that's been cited or denied entrance for having a portable toilet. The odor problems with your existing system can be solved: new odor resistant hoses (Trident 101/102 is just about totally "bulletproof") along with some judicious use of hard PVC. Your tank hasn't permeated, so you don't have to replace it. But... If you can't always get it pumped out when it's full, then you have no choice but to go with a portable system.

What about small daysailers?

If the law in Ontario says no porta-pottie, what do all those boaters with trailerable power boats w/outboards do? No way every little runabout has a pumpout system. What about small daysailer sailboats, they do not all have pumpouts either. I cannot see how it can be enforceable. Something similar was attempted out on the west coast here but was shot down quickly and deemed unenforceable.

Hose disconnect

" is it feasable to plumb the thing in but also have the option to remove the porta pot to empty the tank if no pumpout services are available? " Yes you can. Farm supply stores (e.g. Princess Auto) has a clamp secured disconnect coupling for 1.5 inches hose. Put it on the pumpout hose with a shut off ballvalve and you can have it both ways.

The Ontario law on non fixed toilets is enforced.

The OPP, the RCMP, the CCCG, and the local police all can and will check for fixed heads meeting the legal requirements. I imagine there are some who want to live on the edge, and push their luck, but I'm not one of them. In Ontario, unless you have cooking facilities, fixed head and sleeping quarters you may not consume any alcohol on your vessel - either anchored or at your mooring. I reported a visiting boat last summer to the local authorities after I saw him dump his crap from a bucket into the harbour (on more than one occasion). He was fined and ordered to leave our harbour and not return.
