Yes, you can have it both ways
Both the SeaLand the Thetford "MSD" portapotties can also be carried off the boat if necessary. No one else may care if you carry it up the dock at your marina, but you might..'cuz water and waste weigh 8.333 lbs/gal...making a 6 gallon portapotty tank weigh about 50 lbs when full. You COULD go with the small 2-3 gallon model, but IMO that's not enough capacity for 4 people unless you want to be forced to carry it ashore just about daily. As for Canadian law requiring only permanently installed holding tanks (whether separate or part of a self contained system) on the Great Lakes... They're pretty strict about enforcing it on CN flagged boats, but in 20 years I've yet to hear of a single US boat that's been cited or denied entrance for having a portable toilet. The odor problems with your existing system can be solved: new odor resistant hoses (Trident 101/102 is just about totally "bulletproof") along with some judicious use of hard PVC. Your tank hasn't permeated, so you don't have to replace it. But...If you can't always get it pumped out when it's full, then you have no choice but to go with a portable system.
