Alcohol Stoves

I have a 1975 C-27 with an original Princess pressurized alcohol stove that is beyond repair. It is a 2 burner model that fits in a cut out approximately 19.5" X 12.5". I'm trying to find out if a replacement is available and if so where to find it. Also would be interested in knowing if anyone out there has replaced the alcohol unit with a propane stove/oven unit. Is there enough clearance for such a unit? If so what manufacturer did you use and was it a major task fit it into the counter space available? Much thanks in advance for any help you can throw my way. John

Origo stoves

I just did this in my '73 27 & if you have a traditional interior (as opposed to dinette), You should be able to fit an Origo non-pressurized stove in the space. There may be some required minor modifications but I don't think so. I replaced my ucky old Princess with an Origo with an oven. I LOVE IT!!! I had to do some cutting but it wasn't nearly as difficult as installing propane. Sure, maybe propane is the "best" but is it really? You not only have to shell out the bucks for the stove but also for the tubing, wiring, switches, venting etc, etc, etc. Then you have to install it all! LaDonna

I just purchased a 1985 Catalina 27 which someone has converted to Origo stove and we love it. It is so simple and really safe. It cooks quite fast. Since it is a no pressure stove there is no flare up. With alcohol if you should have a fire put it out with the tea kettle. I don't know why they don't make one for camping too. I agree with LaDonna B.

Propane settles

I agree with the other two posts here. Another thing to think about is the fact that propane settles into the bilge if there is a leak. For the kind of sailing most people do on a Catalina 27 alcohol is the only way to go. Just my opinion. I'm sure others will disagree.

West Marine Catalog

I have a West Marine Catalog for 1999 it doesn't have the current prices for this year but it does list a number of Alchol stoves one and two burner. Hope you find what you are looking for. I know that Catalina offers Butane on some of their models I guess for this year .

LaDonna, Our 27 footer has the dinette arrangement. Am curious about your comment that the stove would work in a traditional but not the type we have? We would also like to consider upgrading although our stove works fine...it makes my bride nervous. Where can I find out more about he model you've mentioned. The oven sounds like a wonderful addition. Any idea what the cost would be? Thanks.

How do it work?

We bought our 1978 C27 last year and when the PO delivered the boat he showed us quickly how to use the alcohol stove, but I didn't pay close enough attention to be able to figure it out today. Can anyone give me some simple and safe directions on how to use it? I know it is pretty simple, but also worry about making the ultimate mistake. You can reply off list if you prefer. John...

I didn't say it *wouldn't* work in a dinette version, just that I don't *know* if it would work (meaning what I did to my boat). I know the stove itself would work, you'll just have to measure carefully and make any necessary modifications. As far as pricing goes, they're not cheap. The stove/oven prices upwards of $1900 if you buy new (I bought used). The stovetops alone are far cheaper and really, you'll probably find you don't use the oven very often to make it worth the extra money. Pressure cookers & dutch ovens would probably suffice. Instructions on lighting the stove. First, make sure there's alcohol in the tank. Pump it up (seemed to me I had to pump forever to get it up there but as there was no gauge, I was just guessing) to pressure. Pour a small amount of alcohol in the burner cup & light (it always dribbled out into the burner pan, so I just lit it there). You do this to pre-heat the burner. After most of the alcohol has burned off, turn the burner "on". It should catch & you should have flames. If the burner isn't hot enough, you might get flare-ups (I believe that's when you get them). Alcohol stoves should be maintained as well. You can contact the manufacturer of your stove & request instructions on how to do this. LaDonna
