Alcohol Stove

We recently purchased our FIRST boat, a 1981 Hunter '27. We are aquainting ourselves to the ins and outs of basically everything. I have NO IDEA how to work an alcohol stove. Im not even sure what brand it is. Any help would be great!

The brand of stove

should be located on the stove somewhere. There are two types of alcohol stoves to my knowledge - pressurized and non-pressurized. If yours has a way way to pump pressure to the stove yours is pressurized. They can be a bit dangerous. If it uses alcohol in a canister, like a sterno can, you open the "flap" all the way, apply a flame to the top of the canister and then close the flap enough to lower the heat for your use.Locate the name of the stove for more specific help.-Doug

the non-pressurized stoves (usually Origo) just have a large canister that you fill up. This MUST be done out of the stove for saftey reasons. The ones that look like an old Coleman (white gas) camp stove can be a little dangerous. It is just like everything else. Be careful with it and be prepared in case of a flare up and you should be fine.We really need to know which type of stove you have and hopefully the brand before we can pass on any of our intellect.

As with any alcohol stove...

...whenever you use it, keep a wet towel near by. In case of a flare up, simply cover the flame with the wet towel to arrest it.

Kenyon or Origo...

If it's the original stove, it's probably a pressurized Kenyon. Our 1979 25' came with one of those, which I handily broke trying to learn how to use it. I was afraid of it anyway.Replaced it with an Origo, 2 burner, non-pressurized stove from West Marine and never looked back. The Origo is easy to light, easy to regulate and as safe as they can make an alcohol stove. My First Mate loved it and would put the kettle on at the drop of a hat.Now we have a new older boat, which again has a pressurized alcohol stove and I'm thinking of a way to replace that one with an Origo.John Goachers/v Perennial

Your stove may be an Origo. That is what came in our 1983 Hunter 31. Does it open in the front and have two big alcohol revervoirs inside? If so and if it had two burners it is an Origo 3000. They are sold by Boat US and West Marine as well as other suppliers, so you can check out the pictures in their catalogs and see if that is what you have. We love our Origo and it has provided some really good meals for us. There should be a rubber like gasket on the top of each reservoir. This thing keeps the alcohol form evaporating, so make sure they are in place. Origo also make a one burner that is a model 1500.
