Hello all, and Happy Thanksgiving, I have an Origo 6000 combination stove/oven on my Hunter 34 and I just love it. My question is about sources for alcohol. I am currently buying the West Marine alcohol for a little over $10 per gallon. It works very well, but I cook a lot and would love to find a less expensive, more readily available source (West Marine is waaaaay on the other side of Raleigh from where I live). I have heard that there is a kind of alcohol available at hardware/home improvement stores which won't cause soot build up. Any suggestions? Thanks, Gary

Alcohol for Origo Stove

I use regular denatured alcohol available at any hardware store. Works for me.

Origo stove

As long as its denatured alcohol, it should be fine.

hardware store Alcohol

I read some where to burn a little in a white glass dish if it leaves no residue it is fine for alcohol stoves. I hope this helps. I get my alcohol a lowes.

How do you light them?

As long as we’re on alcohol stoves, how do you light one? The one I’ve got tells how to fill it, but not how to light it. It is attached to the galley so I can’t easily take it “outside” to try it for the first time.

Bob - lighting it.

Bob. Just open the valve (actually it slides a cover plate off of the canister) and use a "clicker" with a flame to light it. You shouldn't have to worry about a flare-up as long as there are no spills, but, just in case, for safety, keep a wet towel nearby that you could spread over it to douse any flames. Then adjust your flame by turning the knob to the desired level of heat.

methanol is OK

There are three types of alcohol readily available. Methanol, Ethanol and Isopropyl. With either 1,2 or three carbons. Isopropyl should have the most heat content. Denatured alcohol is usually ethanol the type we like to drink mixed with methanol or isopropyl to make them undrinkable. Methanol will put you blind!!! If you can get 100% ethanol it is a great fuel. I'm going to try 100% isopropyl to see how it works. Will probally mix with methanol first then increase the concentration if it works well. Right now we use lowe's denatured alcohol. They recommend it for stoves but don't provide the mixture's recipe.

Odor Problems?

Folks: I have no personal experience with Origo products. A friend of my mine is selling his heater (Origo) because he is allergic to the smell that the burning alchohol gives off. Anyone had any problems with that? Steve

Acetaldehyde

Bothers me too. One of the by-products of burning (oxidizing) ethanol is acetaldehyde, a sweet smelling compound that quickly gives you a headache. It doesn't bother everyone, but if it does, there's not much you can do about it.
