I agree. The Origo is the way to go. Had one on our C25, loved it. Simplicity itself. No moving parts, nothing to maintain or break. Shoot, how can THAT be on a boat???? :):):)

I guess its the pressurize alcohol stoves that give the most problems. (from what I read) -where people can't see the flames and burn themselves.

AFAIK, the oringo are not pressurized. but of course alcohol absorbs water, so if the seal is bad, water forms, and you could have trouble getting it to burn.

OTOH, water puts alcohol fires out, and thus the reason so popular on boats.

I tried in vain to get the old factory stove to work properly, one burner fairly good, the other is a bonfiree. Didn't like seeing alcohol seeping out everywhere when I pumped it up. So it sits in my workshop and occassionally makes coffee, I use a single butane now.

You can buy a portable butane stove in hardcase for $50 from any hardware store.

Origo alcohol stoves are "marine" but start at about $250 for a single burner.

If you get the latter, burn Methyl Hydrate from the hardware store, 1/3 the price of Marine stove alcohol.

How fancy do you need to get? Look up alcohol camping stoves on the internet and make one for free. I made one from a can left over and a round aluminum chimney cap. Boils water and heats boat just fine. However, I view less dishes is better, so if you are a foodie, this will drive you nuts. Uses about 6 oz of alcohol to heat the teapot to boiling. To put it out, I just put a bigger can over it. The alcohol stores in plastic soda bottles. Nothing to break or maintain. Fine for two people. If kids come along, I grab the coleman propane stove.

Yeah, I think it was second time we used it we overfilled a heating bowl (couldn't see the pooled alcohol in the pan) and lit the stove that came on our GS. Next thing we knew the alcohol in the pan below the burners was also on fire.
Didn't know about putting out the fire with water so I got to clean that nasty powder from a fire extinguisher off of and out of everything in the salon. No matter how careful it's used that crap gets everywhere.
The stove was next to the club dumpster that same day and no one wanted it so off to the dump.
Replaced it with a Princess LPG that worked great with no problems for years and is still on the boat.

I use a turkey baster to fill it...much safer way to refill as you worry less about spilling.

However, I am curious...do the recessed origo's have that problem? My old non-origo did, but it sat on top.

origo has a one litre removable canister you can take outside or over sink to fill, never heard of marine stove fuel, most people call it denatured alcholhol, sold at any hardware store or paint store.

Non-pressurized stoves like the origo 1500 and 3000 are on the whole VERY safe. The vast majority of (rare) accidents involve filling the canister; either refilling the stove with it still lit or igniting spilt fuel after a fill. As noted alcohol burns in a clear flame so it is hard to see. Develop a safe process to fill them and they are very safe.

They remain a very good choice for boats where propane systems are overkill.

There was a great article in Good Old Boat magazine about non-pressurized alcohol stoves a few issues ago, that talks a lot about the advantages and disadvantages of alcohol stoves. Might be worth a look.

This was an old pressurized stove and we (I think it was me) overfilled the bowl that warms the burner before it can be lit.
I understand the non-pressurized are much safer for klutzes like me.

Back to the OP, try and find a way to mount the stove so it is fixed and cannot fall over. Some of these 'camping' solution are low cost but are not designed to be used on a boat. Better still if you can gimbal the stove. The Origo gimbal mounts fit both the 1500 and 3000. Here's a 3000 on our 26 footer. The pot holders are also a nice add and keep pots on the burners.
