Hi there!

Is the first time I participate in the group So I think I should introduce myself: My name is Daniel and I am a beginer in sailing. Started learning practical navigation courses and navigation theory one year ago. I am living in Finland and I am thinking of buying a second hand Albin Vega since there are a few ones quite afordable. But I have no Idea howe to calculate the yearly costs for Maintenance. Anyone has done a list of the average expenses of maintain and repair an Albin Vega every year?

Dani, you can spend as much as you want, or as little as you want. If the boat is in good condition to start, then maintenance is next to zero. Boats are very demanding if you let them be. I have had my Vega since 1983, and in the beginning I spent a lot of money on her that was not necessary, as she was in excellent condition. Now she is old and needs some tender loving care, but I am not spending anymore money on her unless absolutely necessary. She lies in Poland, and it costs me 230 zlotys a month in the marina. Other than that there are no costs for her. When I am out cruising, of course there are marina costs (cheap in Poland), and fuel and oil, otherwise nothing. At the moment I need a mainsail, but my wife says she will repair it and we can use the money saved for cruising and beer !!! Your name is Alcaraz, interesting since you live in Finland. Greetings Dani,It is very difficult to translate costs into your
unique area and location but with a little research you can answer much
of your own question. There are certain costs that you must entail on a regular basis but
are different for your location. They are (but are not limited to):Slip fee (including possible separate water and electricity)Haul-out put-in fee due to winter needsStorage fee (as a result of the above)InsuranceThen there are one time or hopefully not too often costs that only you can assess due to the condition of the craft you wish to buy. They would entail (but certainly are not limited to):Hull condition, need for bottom paint, repair, etc.Drive shaft, screw condition, other thru hull fittings and zincsTopside condition, need for paint.Woodwork condition topsideWindow condition (need for gasket replacement)Standing rigging conditionRunning rigging condition (which would be replace more often than standing rigging)Motor condition/improvement/replacementGround tackle condition (anchor, land lines)Interior condition (electrical systems, water systems, pumps, batteries, etc.)As you can see, costs will vary. The first set of items should give you the repeating annual costs while, as some of the other responders have noted, the second group will be one time and can be very expensive. But once you get over the second set of numbers then the cost of maintenance should not be too burdensome. The Vega is a great little boat and I'm proud to have the only one in the Gulf Region of the Southern USA (that I know of!!!)!Cheers,Hal

Hal, where are you located? I'm in Central Florida, but you can still maintain your status because my Vega will probably remain on her trailer for another year. (insert sad face here!)

Hey there Gene,I'm north of New Orleans on Lake Pontchartrain in Mandeville. I sit in the water all year round. Glad to see that I still hold the title of the Only Vega on the Gulf......or OVG!!!! But I've not heard from Texas.... who knows how long my throne will stand...

I've just been told by Wes that there are at least 5 Vegas on the Florida Gulf Coast..... There goes my bubble. Busted. Would love to meet up with one or more of those folks, not sure if they are members of this group. Hal

I used to keep mine at NAS Boca Chica, then moved it to the City Marina on Roosevelt. Kept it there for years before coming to Europe. Home port still reads Key West, Florida :) MSG Frank Gallardo Jr.
