Albin Vega for cruising????

I have an opportunity to buy a 1 owner Vega for a very attractive
$$$$. I would have to clean it up, get new cushions (covers?) and
cockpit cushions, probably re-wire the electrical. The standing
rigging is original but still looks good, may need replacing as will
the running rigging. The inboard diesel has been done away with and
in its place is a 25 Nissan of recent vintage. The rest of the boat
looks original and is in decent shape as far as I can tell without a
haul out. There is a little rot at the bottom of the companionway
bulkhead on the bottom on one side, but I don't think it is a major
concern. At the asking price, I don't even know if I want to spend
the $$$ on a survey.

My question to you owners is: I want to sail to either the Carib and
island hop, or cruise to Central America and livaboard for a while.
Either way, I would be debarking from Texas. Is this aboat I should
consider for the journey? I realize the interior is a bit cramped,
but I would either be singlehandling or possibly havve one other on
board. Are there any special concerns about this model...I believe
it to be a 1978 vintage. I have heard good things about the Vega and
this may be an affordable way to cruise.

Hi Dan

The Vega will take you anywhere as long as she is properly maintained. Many
have crossed the Atlantic and quite a few have circumnaviagted. You can
tell by
the Vega number the year she was built. A 1978 model will be 3000 plus as a
number. Consider carefully an inboard diesel for such a long journey and
liveaboard. All spres are available for the Vega so dont be put off as any
Vega
can be made seaworthy with effort, enthuasim and a little know-how - oh yes
and
a little money

Based on everything I have heard and personally experienced plus numerous folks who have done what you plan, I urge you to join the group. I never regreted buying my Vega six years ago. I've been sailing or otherwise screwing around sailing for longer than I care to admit.

Dan,

What part of Texas are you from? We just had a fantastic Vega
rendezvous in Offats Bayou near Galveston a few months ago. Alot of
nice fine sailors were there. My Vega, along with several others are
in the Clear Lake/ Galveston Bay area. I'll be going down to my boat
this weekend. I'd be happy to discuss the vega with you. My wife and
I will be cruising the carib and beyound on our vega in about 2 or 3
years. I've owned my vega for about a year now and am very pleased
with it.
