Think about new Vega windows?Slowly, the original window frames made of rubber getting old and tend to leak. Of course new profiles can be inserted but this is very difficult to do and costs also!Sören Nerup, a Vega owner from Denmark and member of the Danish Vega club has looked for new windows with aluminum frames and found a Swedish company producing them. And, if several sets are ordered at a very interesting price. Therefore Sören started an initiative to place a group order for as many window sets as possible. Tom,I replaced the window gaskets on my Vega (827) last year and it's not that difficult if you have the right tools. First it takes simple VW gasket material (west coast style or with the locking strip) and if you get the locking strip kind (recommended for a tighter fit) you need a locking strip insert tool and an angled pick tool (get them on the web). With two people (wife and me) I did all six windows with a little elbow grease and some soapy water in one day. Overall it was a LOT cheaper than going the new window route. I don't mean to take business away from the Sweds, but it really is not that bad a job...If you want I can send pictures of the 2 tools you will need in a PM. Hal

Hal, Have you read Out of the Blue? Book by a young lady doing the circle route of the Atlantic. Got knocked down and cabin port stove in. She used her head door to make a storm shutter. She almost lost the boat. IMHO there are 2 glaring faults with the
Vega. Oversize cabin ports which can be pushed out by a wave and a cockpit which is too big to drain quickly. Both need remedying if considering and offshore cruising. Chuck, Steve and I have all found different routes on the ports. All of them are stronger
that the OEM. Walt

The book is "Out of the Blue" by Ann Miller.It is the kind of reading that gives a newbie confidence, if she could do it, so can I....My windows don't leak (at the moment), but thought the aluminum frames would be more seaworthy and cheaper than getting some cnc'd myself.Also, they are more aesthetically pleasing than bolting acrylic covers over them. Fair enough Tim. I don't know the intent of the author but I've hit some pretty rough weather and had no problems, but better overkill than under! Also another design fault of the Vega is the fact that the mast support is weak and needs further strengthening IMHO. Just a thought on the subject. Hal
