Thanks Tim. I have no idea what kind of steel they used originally. No plastic bushing noted when I rebuilt the rudder about 20 years ago. Lyric is now 50 years old having been laid up in 1967.
I'm thinking that 303 will probably be adequate for the remainder of her life and that cutting it to whatever length is needed is something I can manage. I did complete a year in an apprentice program in a naval machine shop before a nasty divorce caused me
to drop out. It was that divorce that led me to buy Lyric. I liked sailing, needed a place to live and Lyric was available.
Thanks again, Walt

You probably know that 303 is less corrosion resistant than 304 which, in turn, is less corrosion resistant than 316.
In my rudder shoe, there is a plastic bushing, that if you have one as well, may be worn out enough to allow a 1" bar to fit.
1" is 25.4 mm. 0.4mm is 1/64" or 0.015748031496. Not very much. You may be able to get a shop that deals with stainless prop shafts to ship you a cutoff, if you want 316. tgFrom: "walt judy brown allore bestvega@... [AlbinVega]"

Hi Jon, I love eBay! Just ordered a piece of 303 stainless 25 mm by 8 inches for $18.45 with shipping. The seller has 3 more pieces if anybody else is interested. Walt

It is certainly 25 mm stock which was hard for me to find in the US. It is expensive to have the shop taper down a 1" stock to 25mm. You may have to purchase a piece from across the pond via ebay which isn't
terribly expensive. As I recall, you might have to buy a meter of it and cut what you need. The shipping takes a while so best to do it early. Are you pulling the pin and re-gluing in a new one? Is the old one getting wiggly?
