Has anyone used a ALADO Roller Furling/Reefing I have a catalina 27 and want to add a roller furling on it. I see this one on ebay all the time. All the write ups about it, it seems that it would work great for me. Any input would be great

Thanks
Pat

I looked into it. It seems like a decent design for the cost, but a CDI roller furler is probably similar in cost and they have a very long track record. Personally, having owned a CDI, I think I would consider the Alado design superior in some ways, but the CDI worked fine. For a 27 I would opt out of the bearing option on the CDI, which would make it pretty inexpensive.

My next big item for my boat is a furler. I like the Alado. The design looks solid. I like the aluminum foil. Also I prefer the way the furler it's self looks over the CDI.
Another feature I wasn't sure about is the halyard on the foil it's self and not off the mast head. Other furlers are designed that way so apparently it's no big deal. It will free up a halyard on the mast head also. When I sailed on another guys boat, it had a CDI. I think the halyard is on the foil also like the alado.
I pretty much have my mind made up to buy an alado in the next few months. As soon as I can scrape up a grand.
I asked about furlers a month ago or so. I don't think any one replied that they owned an alado. That is kind scary. But I would be willing to give it a shot anyway.
I have a salesman showing my product that no one else owns in the world yet, and no one has heard of my company before. I sell my product for less than what a big company would sell it for if they had the idea first. My product is quality, but since no one has heard of me before I sell it as cheap as I can to get as many out as I can. Maybe Alado is doing the same thing.

CDI & the bearing option

I For a 27 I would opt out of the bearing option on the CDI, which would make it pretty inexpensive.
And all the C25 guys, who know what they are talking about, say never buy a CDI without the bearing option because it binds too easily.

Alado has an exterior halyard - not the CDI.

I decided on the CDI a couple of years ago rather than the Alado. I liked the idea that the CDI has the halyard internal on the extrusion and not flying about outside like the Alado.
Have the F4 with the ball bearing option - great addition to the boat, and has made so much easier.

Which furler?

This is my 3rd season on a CDI model #4 with bearings on my P26W. The furler works fine
no problems no binding ever. The hard plastic foil gives no trouble. I had a profurl on my previous boat, supposidly a superior furler. I had lots of trouble with the halyard binding up on it. for the extra $100 I would definitely go with the bearings. The only problem I can see with a CDI is the tricky halyard which apparently the Alado also has. It makes sail changes a little tricky but once you get used to it , its not a big deal

I agree about the halyard on the CDI. I hated it, but apparently the fix is to just run a bigger line to it through a block so you can get more torque on it. Trying to do it by hand by hanging over the bow pulpit was a pain. Wish I had thought it through when I had one. Other than that, I felt that the plastic foil made the CDI more prone to pumping, which resulted in an annoying squeak, squeak, squeak, whenever I was sailing into the wind, but perhaps my mast was tuned incorrectly.

Hermit...you should contact them with a deal. They sell you a furler and for every addtional one they sell after you review it on this site they send you money back. Given your background as a designer they might go for it.

What if it's bad? Then I will have to give a bad review and not get paid.

for Hermit the CDI is cheaper. If it gives trouble which it probably wont , you can send it back to Homer NY for parts or repairs. If you have trouble with an Alado learn to speak portugese your gonna be sending it back to Brazil/ for BobM I dont know if you still have a CDI but heres a couple of thoughts 1 You said pumping! either the rigging was not right or the extrusion was to long. I get no pumping my extrusion is as straight as an arrow. 2.
You say you had trouble hoisting a jib with the internal halyard. I change jibs often Heres a few tips. First make sure your jib is flaked down on deck not twisted so it ready to go up without binding . Second there is no need to to use an tackle bliocks winches ect. Sit down
on the starboard side at the bow legs around either side of the pulpit. Make sure your messenger line dosent twist or wrap around the foil Keep it straight. while hoisting. I use a 5/16 messenger line with a snap shacked on a loop left permanently tied near the end of the halyard The entire change takes me about 10 min. Im 72

A couple of hundred bucks more fo rhte harken would be worth it to get the support if I need it. Alado does need to get some state side support.

Harken has some of the best support in the industry. There are very few companies that offer their level of support.
