I have an ACR AIS Nauticast 2675 (receive only with a built in multiplexer). The output of the ACR is connected to a Raymarine C90W chartplotter (NMEA Port 1 set for 38.4kb). The ACR has its own antenna and is feed from a Raymarine multiplexer (4.8 kb). The Raymarine multiplexer has 2 inputs: 1 from the C90W providing all available SeaTalk data (GPS, Speed, Wind, Depth) in NMEA (4.8kb) format and the 2nd input is the fast heading (NMEA 4.8kb) from the SPX5 autopilot. There is a USB output from the ACR (38.4 kb) that in the past I have connected to my laptop and it will display all the data on my charting software. All works well together.

Santa brought the crew an iPad for Xmas. Somewhat of a system guy, I would like to be able to display all the available data via wifi to the iPad. The C90W does not have either wifi or Bluetooth capability. However, I was thinking that there must be a widget out there that would take the USB output from the AIS and send it out in a format that the ipad could work with. An initial look on the internet shows there are routers with a USB input and that could be easily powered from 12Vdc.

Of course I am seeking someone who has successfully done just this. Otherwise all constructive input is gratefully accepted.

Why USB out? the NMEA0183 out fomr the device would be more usable.... like by this beauty.

0183, 2k AND seatalk in, wifi out. works with all the big ipad apps.

Not cheap, but what price glory??

I would think that you could put a wyfi dongle on your computer and then find an app that will allow computer access and operation by using your iPad.

Ultimately, I would like to use a single device to do that one job. Mount it out of the way in behind somewhere and forget about it. I would connect it so that it is on only when the chartplotter/instruments are on. A laptop is pretty power hungry (3 or 4 plus amps) where the typical router uses about 0.5A.

I just send everything to a laptop and use iPad/Android to RDP (remote control to the laptop (WinXP-Pro sp3). Yes, the touch screen works but a bit strange.

The laptop runs SeaclearII. I am sure OpenCPN would work.

would this help? It takes the nmea signal right to wifi, no usb link involved.

THey now have several options in addition to the imux. I think the price is reasonable, it used to be online but can't find it listed. Guess you'll have to email to find out the cost.

I thought maybe there was an inexpensive big box store device that would fill the bill. Wrong input protocol/format for what I need. Those that have been named in previous posts would do the job but have multiplexers which I already have. The Digital Yacht ZDIGWLN10HS, although pricey maybe what is needed.

Thanks.

Thanks very much Sum.

The Catalina post is very, very close to the information that I hoped for. Particularly the paragraph from Bill Harmon: "The only way to get the same data into the iPad is to send it via a WiFi router, not a cable. The multiplexer can send the data to the computer directly, or to the WiFi router directly (which could then transmit it to the computer via WiFi), or simultaneously by a cable connection to the computer and via WiFi to the iPad. This is the same kind of connections that you have at home if you have a wireless network."

I understand that the data has to come to the iPad via wifi not cable. I also understand the data to computer part; but, I am stymied as to how the multiplexer can send the data to the wifi directly? He goes on to suggest that this is same connections as in a home wireless network.

I think we are getting close to the solution but not quite.

This is also worth some further research:
