Reading about the new class of AIS systems, it seemed like a valuable thing to share. This White Paper has a good review of what AIS is and how it works. Perhaps it is a bit overboard to say it is the "the most widely used and significant navigation safety technologies since the introduction of radar" but it is a great tool that extends the situational awareness of sailors traveling in busy commercial trafficked waters.
