Airconditioner issues

Hello owners,

I have a Hunter 41 DS (2006). The aft air conditioner fan makes a shrill noise when it is on a slow speed (quiet on high speed) and just this past weekend the compressor kept cycling on for 2 minutes then off for 5 minutes without cooling. The forward unit was working fine and they both use the same pick-up and filter/strainer. Any AC specialist out there?

Thanks in advance

Mike

sounds like you have a bad bearing in the unit or the fan is loose on the shaft check that out and see what you find

Thanks Woody, Have you ever pulled you aft unit out? Is there enough slack in in the water lines to slide to unit out of the "box" that it's mounted in?

more than likely not so just unhook them from their fittings and do what you have to do to resolve the problem ...in doing so you may find you need to replace some hoses anyway ...it never hurts to do service work on your boat because there is always a reason you are going through this ...unfortunately a boat is not like an auto where you can just park it in the slip and leave it till the next time...my theory is they get lonely and cry out for attention

Could be two unrelated symptoms.

a) Shrill fan noise may mean a bearing is gone, or a shaft spacer is out of place. If this didn't first happen after disassembling and re-assembling the fan, replace fan.

b) Cycling on and off issue is not likely related.

1) Verify water flow. (With bilge pump operation verified, close off discharge seacock, disconnect discharge hose, and start AC unit. If no or low water output, clear blockage. (Unit will automatically abort start-up if insufficient water supply.)

2) If water is OK, verify power at control board terminals. Measure the voltage supplied (at the controller power terminals) during start-up. If low, look for power supply, wiring, or connection faults.

3) If power is OK, swap out the compressor controller board.

These are heat pumps. They heat and cool. There is a reversing valve that basically makes the condenser become the evaporator and vise versa. My main cabin unit was shutting down on "HPF". I cranked up the stat to make it go to heat mode and then changed the stat to make it cool, all good. Sometimes the reversing valve sticks and that is how you exercise it. Yours sounds like it needs a charge judging by the cycle time. The screech is probably the fan. Good luck.
