I have a 34 1985 Hunter and need new air scoops (air cowlings)5 in. Dia. Can't find a provider. Any information as to where to locate new or a means to refirbish existing. ThanksJ Galbraith S/V Dinnae-Ken II
J:What measurement are you using?a. outside diameter of mounting ring?b. deck plate cut out size?c. vent opening?Check out the deck plate cut out size. I think that this is what you need to be usings. If the new one is slightly larger, you should be OK. The ones in the HOW store look like they should be on a $1,000,000 boat!
I replaced the cowls (dorade vents) on my H '31 with solar fan/vents. They fit in the same hole and provide constant air flow. You just switch one to pull and the other to push. Works great.
I plan on doing just what he did! Another thought is a piece of 1/4 STARBOARD, cut to fit the top of the dorade box, sealed and fastened with screws, then drill new holes to fit air scoops that are available.
Have a H34 84. First I do not know how the dorade box is on the other hunters mentioned with the solar vents but I do not think it will work on a 34 as both dorades operate through the same box. With one pulling air and the other pushing air you will be just exchanging air through the box and not down into the cabin area. After I lost one overboard in the middle of a heavy air race I had Phil at Crowleys Yacht Yard in Chicago search for a replacement. There were none to be found short of putting in a complete set of two new plates into the fiberglas box along with new screwin dorades. They were chrome over brass and the pair would run about $800 complete. Not an option. So I went on the Hunter web site looking for anyone with an extra in the appropriate size. Found someone who lost one 5"
