I am trying something a little off the wall. I am trying to figure out a way to install a 5200 BTU window unit on the deck to blow through the hatch. There are some others in my marina that are trying to do the same. The window unit, of course, is much cheaper then goin the way of Marine air by about $700. I think that I have it figured out. I was just wondering if any of you engineers out there have done anything like this. If so let me know what the results were from your project. When I get done I will post a photo of the results. seth-

very interested in your findings

I have a ~5k BTU A/C unit trimmed with plywood so as to fit into the companionway which works very well. The only problem is you have to be a contortionist to get in and out of the cabin. I have been thinking of a simple (and inexpensive) design of positioning the unit in front of the hatch, and somehow securing a custom sewn canvas or tarp to seal the openings around the hatch. Already finished with an electrical feed to the V berth. It's already bumping the 90's down here in So. Alabama, so I am motivated to start soon. I am very interested in sharing info and pics. seperate air supply and return

you will have to be sure to seperate the air supply with the air return. a similar application: mounted unit suspended below dock or on top of, fabricate 2 ducts 1 for supply 1 for return, these are rectangular @ a/c and round at end . approx 10-12 inces length, base round sizes on fan perf. (c.f.m.) and velocity(f.p.m.) run rubber/vinyl " flex duct" to the companionway and or hatch ideal is to seperate here too, 8" round is probably good for return snd 6" is supply for velocity. remember compressors like to have their oil nice and level , if unit is out of level for any period of time , a allowance of time in a level position must occur for adequate oil migration before safe operation. there are alternatatives to a closed loop air system, such as 100% fresh air 9conditioned which you would force or pressurize the cabin with conditioned air and force out the hot air. ironically just like sailing its all about air movement. I like to take my ball cap and dunk it till its full and put it on me gord thats what I got for a/c
