I would appreciate any tips on tracking down an air leak in the suction side of my domestic water system. Air slowly fills the strainer after shut down. Line is approx 20 feet from the tank and goes thru a main shut off valve.

Inspect the strainer housing for small cracks around the fittings.. check the bowl gasket carefully..

yes the only place air will enter is where there is lower than atmospheric pressure in the system. The tank and plumbing all are at atmospheric or higher unless you are pumping up from the tank to the pump. The straner is one place (and a common thing to crack and leak) for the pump to create a lower than atmospheric pressure in the lines. You could try disconnecting the tank vent and applying some air pressure there while a helper looks for leaks also.

Thanks for info. Very frustrating. Pump is higher than tanks, problem is intermittent, sometimes when the pump shuts down the bowl stays full, but every now and again I can see bubbles migrate into the bowl which air locks pump next time it starts.
