Air Filter

I am a believer in a kinda real air cleaner .. I made an element out of air cleaner foam that does not degrade into dust as the original did. My buddy's Westerbeke ingested a really small piece of a stainless screw .. that lodged itself into the top of a piston and the stress riser created a place for a crack to start. That crack eventually cracked through the piston.. the rebuild was fun.. but expensive. We found the little piece of stainless still embedded in the piston top at the point of origination of the fatigue crack.

Yanmar Filter

I have a Yanmar factory filter and it has a stainless or some kind of metal screen built into it and every so often I clean it and think it is the second one I have had since new 2007.
It seems to hold up very well and maybe it was made better or improved over the years.
I did try putting a K&N auto racing filter but way too much noise and I wasted my time $$$$$,back with the factory filter and I think Yanmar did away the old foam filter and now it is like a AC filter material with a metal screen.
I like having some kind of filter on the engine even though pretty clean in engine compartment but keeps any dust out of engine.
