This may bea dumb question but here goes. When I remove the cover to the air filter on the engine there is a metal cone shaped insert. The insert has large mesh type holes in it. That's all that's there. Is there supposed to be some type of paper filter or something that helps to actually filter the air particles besides this lone metal mesh type piece? Thanks in advance, Joe Mullee

Gone!

Joe, Yes there is supposed to be a foam filter. The mesh cone you mention is the frame that the filter sits on. Sounds like someone took the filter out, forgot to put one in, or it disintegrated which is not an uncommon thing for them to do. If you see any black powdery residue around the inside of the housing or the mesh frame, that's all that remains of the filter. Tim

Joe: your air filter element

is probably the same as mine. You can buy these at Torresen Marine Diesel Direct (see link below). I've also had luck buying Yanmar parts at the Washington Marina Store at the foot of the 14th St Bridge in DC. You might want to call them to see if they stock it(202-554-0222). Finally, there used to be a Yanmar dealer over at Casa Rio Marina, but not sure it's still there. That would be the closest to you.

You know Joe, that foam is probably the only

contaminant your engine will ever be exposed to. How dusty is it where you sail? I replaced mine when it disintegrated but I'm convinced it was a waste of time.

Joe,...

The cone is actually known as a NOISE SUPPRESSOR. It is also a filter for large pieces of filth. As did mine, it desintegrated and was ingested. Buy a replacement annually, if necessary, or simply wash it with mild soap and water mix, but ensure it isn't wet when you replace it.
