Air Conditioning

I am moving to New Orleans and need to install air conditioning. Does anyone with a H31 have any suggestions as to location and routing. I am planning on going with a Mermaid 12,000 BTU.

Starboard cockpit locker...

...is where mine sits on a platform. Duct work routes down both sides with the main outlet exiting into the saloon from the base of the forward section of the starboard banquette.

Ditto Doug's location

My AC is mounted in y H320 in the same place as Doug mentions in his response except that the forward and aft ducts are both routed on the starboard side.

AC location

My Mermaid 12CH is mounted under the aft seat of the settee on the starboard side. The through hulls are located there as well. The previous owner had that done by the yard. The only problem I have is that I have only one vent blowing aft, which makes the aft berth cool, but the v-berth never cools down enough. Otherwise, the thermostatic control keeps the cabin cool and dry. I have found that if I try to keep the cabin below about 76 degrees, it runs until it freezes, so be aware of trying to keep it too cool. In the heat/humidity of summer, I can run it during the day at a higher temperature, which keeps it comfortably dry.

Yep, you're gonna need AC!

Welcome to N'Awlins, where sweating is a way of life! Hope to see you an Pontchartrain someday.

How many BTUs

How many BTUs do you recommend for the NOLA area? Is an M12 enough or should I go bigger?

More is better!

I would go with a 16K BTU unit. I have an H386 with a 16K unit and it just does not do an adequate cooling job in the very hot summer months. At one time, I had a 10 year old Tartan 34 with a 16K BTU unit. It was much more comfortable in the hot summer months.

Coupla' thoughts.

The H31 has much less interior volume than an H380. Around Lake Erie a 12K would be more than adequate. I have a Mermaid 12K on an H37C. Still, given that the size is similar and the prices are close, a 16K would seem to make sense. But we know from other posts here on HOW that you can run a 12K with a Honda 2000E generator. My dockmate cannot run the 16K unit on his H386 with the Honda. Shade makes a great deal of difference. Keeping that direct sun off of the decks and plexiglass is easily worth 4K. I have a large awning that goes over the boom and attaches to the lifelines. FWIW.

I've got 16k in a H33 - it gets cold

I've got a 16k BTU 9 year old marine air unit under the v berth in my 1980 H33. It will frost up the cabin, but in the summer when it is 95 degrees and 90% humidity, it runs almost all the time - boats aren't insulated very well. Based on how mine works, I would think that a 12k unit that you allowed the fan to run on even when the compressor was off would cool a H31 adequately. Then you could run the ac off a relatively inexpensive generator if necessary. Mine seems to work best in the summer if I let the compressor cycle, but leave the fan on speed 2 of 6 speeds continuously all the time - lower noise level, less hot spots.

I just looked at your toe rail never noticed before that it was different than mine. I like yours and will probably get it done there they are talking a $6,000 price tag though. Jim
