We have just purchased a 1991 38M-can anyone give any advice on setting up for ac? I know ac on a boat looks bad but wife has med condition and cant take extreme heat conditions. I have heard of using a window ac unit with a port generator.

Well, are you intending on using it while under sail or on the hook?
If so you will need something other than the batteries to power them. That usually sounds like a genset. Alternately you can use the engine (like a car AC unit) to power it. another alternative is a dedicated fuel engine to directly drive the compressor. The first alternative is probably the easiest to do but takes up the most living/storage space (genset+AC). It does have the advantage of you would then have a genset to power other things and charge the batteries ;-) The second option is slightly more expensive for the AC but since no genset is needed it is cheaper than alternative one. The last one is possible but there are no commercial units being built that I know of so it would be a Rub Goldburg contraption of your own keen design. Need a gas/diesel engine and car AC compressor mounted to a skid.
Other issues, can you run the air ducting and return without taking the boat completely apart? do you have a spare thru-hull to supply the cooling water for the condenser?
WM and Defender have the parts. Usually comes as a kit or pallet depending on which alternative you go with.
Good luck

I have used a small window AC unit with a Honda 2000 generator for the last 4 years with no problem, but only on the slip. I think it would get real hairy under way.

Yea!, I'm not thinking the window AC is a solution except at the slip.
