Hi group! I have a hunter 410.. and interested in putting in air conditioning this year.. I got a few quotes.. both guys wanted to drill new holes in the hull for intake.. I never asked them whether or not I could use an existing hole.. like the bow head, water intake.. was thinking , why cant he use some "y" connection.. and save me the $$ for haul out ... ps (the boat is in the water now).. What do you guys think ? Thanks very much

It didn't work well for me

I tried to share the seawater between an air conditioner and a head. Every time that you flushed the head it would lose prime in the air conditioner. Maybe a check valve would have helped? Some boats, like Island Packets, have a large manifold that many seawater taps come from the same thruhull. The ones that I saw were large, about 1 1/2". Bill

Mine is shared

The water intake for my A/C is shared with my head intake. I haven't had any problems. The only time the A/C loses its prime is after excessive healing on a long starboard tack. When it loses prime, I just pump the toilet intake a few times.

Use a 'T' valve,

I installed a 'T' ball valve on top of my engine water seacock. Since I never run the engine and the A/C at the same time this works well. Picture is the 'T' valve on top of original ball valve. Have since installed larger thru-hull with true seacock. A 'T' valve would not work well with the head thru-hull. You would have to stop the A/C and turn the valve whenever you wanted to flush. For head use you really need a check valve. Otherwise a flush can siphon water from the A/C pump inlet requiring a prime to get restarted. Just depends how high and how far away the A/C waterpump is located.
