Air conditining - quick prime fix

Just wanted to share an extremely easy fix for the A/C losing its prime to the pump.

I have the cruise-aire system on a 2007 H36 - but I think this system is pretty generic. I was getting a shutdown problem due to not having water flowing thru the system - the pump is not self priming, and had lost its prime.

The 5 minute fix was to:
- close the thru hull
- disconnect the hose from the upstream side of the pump
- put a bowl under the now open pump fitting, open the thru hull to allow a couple cups of water to flow thru the pump - priming it
- close thru hull, attach and clamp hose to pump, and start the A/C
- toss the water in the bowl and relax !

Do you mean "downstream" side of the pump? In any case, what I do is take the discharge hose downstream of the a/c unit and just suck a bit on it and it primes the pump just fine.

I have a 2007 H-36 and I have never had a problem with the pump losing
prime at all ever.
I do check the strainer often and when I do put the strain back on what I do is unscrew the strainer a little with the thru hull open and allow water to fill the strain and let water spill out of it allowing all the air out and this fulls up the srainer with water and no air.
Maybe Hunter used diferent type of pumps in between our boats,my boat was delivered in Jan 07 so I guess it was really built in 06.
I also did enjoy a trip to the Hunter factory tour in Florida but just missed seeing my boat being built by a week.
I have been very happy with our H-36 and it is everything we had hoped for plus much more than we ever expected with no problems.

Paul sounds like a good solution.........on our boat I have a T on each thru-hull. One side of the T goes to a barb with the original hose, the other side of the T goes to a ball valve and then to a hose barb. These hose barbs were originally put on to winterize the engine, generator, AC and head. I use them now to "summerize" the boat and flush the salt water out after she is hauled for the summer.
To prime the AC I run a hose from the kitchen sink tap to the hose barb on the AC ball valve, close the thru-hull, open the ball valve and run the fresh water through the AC.
Also a handy way to flush everything with fresh water or anti-freeze.........

Rick 486 - I meant the "output" side of the AC pump - this allows it to flood and prime. Sucking on the hose at the AC Unit end might result in me getting a mouthful of harbor water - yuck !

Bob - the T's sound interesting - would save the "Chinese handcuffs" struggle each fall of pulling all the hoses of the thru hulls to pump antifreeze into the systems - I need to think thru exactly what fittings I need to do this but it sounds like a great idea.

This has nothing to do with losing prime. If you can, flush your A/C unit with fresh water from the dockside hose, you will be suprised the color of the water that comes out! I do this a few times each season.
