I was a young & inexperienced sailor when I bought my "Poor Mans Hobbie" in 1972. It was the first series 15' Venture Catamaran with banana hulls & weighed only 210 lbs. Most people regarded its genoa jib & main sail as being much to large for the boat. And it was much more fragile than a Hobbie.I loved it, but suffered many dumps before I learned it was much less stable than a hobbie 16. But soon I was running away from "16" friends. I was living near Lake Michigan and I was running it to the speed limit on broad reaches in considerable wind on that lake. But at very high speed it begins to rock for & aft. If you don't compensate with the main it will "tea kettle". One morning I went out, after a storm the day before, to find smooth wide spaced swells about 3' high. It was like sailing on low hills. Soon the wind got stronger & I was racing with the wind. I happened to turn slightly into the wind as I went over a swell. The nose lifted a little & tramp inflated as I left the water! With no resistance at all the cat surged ahead about 2' off the water. I was terrified & let go of the main & landed with the downwind tip almost digging in.I had covered about 40' without a wake & I was shaking! I decided to try it carefully sitting way back off the tramp on the hull to see if I could keep the opposite tip up. When "Air Born" the boat accelorates & starts to roll downwind! The solid canvas tramp was catching ground effect air & lifting the boat. What a rush! Soon I was getting close to 3' off the water and covering 80' without a wake! After that I flew my Venture Cat whenever there were swells. I did cartwheel once at about 30 mph. I was lucky enough to eject before it went over & only broke a side stay cable. I still have my much repaired Venture 15 after 32 years & love to run the wind on a Minnesota lake. It is one of my reasons to stay in shape in old age. However, I would never try to go "Air Born" on Lake Michigan again, but in the words of Bob Seger; "I remember I remember" -- the womp, womp as the two hulls came down onto the water again!Marlin
